[Question #13408] HSV-2 antibody test

I tested positive to have HSV-2 antibodies. Can I kiss someone without disclosing this? I have no visible symptoms and my ex never got it (they got tested). I would disclose for sex. I know if it is genital it would not travel to your mouth. Because I had the antibody test and have no symptoms I do not know how to verify where it is located. I know new research shows that it can be in either place. I don’t feel tingling or itching at my mouth. If I had symptoms for genitalia (visual or non-visual) does that mean HSV-2 would not be oral and I could not infect someone with a kiss (and therefore not disclose)?

Would taking an anti viral make a difference?

Any advice to help this be less ambiguous would be very helpful.

First, there are lots of false positives on the HSV 2 antibody test.  Big problem. What lab did your testing?  Was there a number associated with your positive test?  If yes, what was it?
We know that 95% of HSV 2 is genital.  Lately, I've also seen that either virus can be in either location, in online sources.  While that is technically true, HSV 2 oral infection is rare indeed and when present there, it rarely recurs or sheds.  So if I were you, I wouldn't disclose this prior to kissing, no.  And I would also recommend a confirmatory test if your number was low or if you don't know, given you have no symptoms of genital herpes.

Hi! Thank you for your response. I got tested twice. First at big name clinic then with labcore. My results were 19.70 and 18.60.

For more context:
I remember hearing that I got tested to have antibodies for mono in elementary school but we never noticed when/if I got mono and I have not gotten sick with it sense. This is in the same family and I wonder if it would contribute.

The reason for testing is that I dated someone who told me they had it. After research and talking to a medical professional it looked very unlikely that I would have done anything to contract HSV but then I tested positive on the antibody test.

With index values that high, I would strongly suggest that this is accurate.  However, I have seen false positive results as high at 17 but that is rare.  You could do a western blot to confirm this diagnosis if you wish.  Taking antiviral medication reduces transmission to a sex partner by 48%.  Condoms reduce transmission of HSV 2 from women to men by 65% so together, these two things really help partners not get infected.

Thank you! So to clarify, it is not nessacary to disclose before kissing but should disclose and take precautions for anything further?
