[Question #3112] Question about Herpes

Im just a little nervous im 35 havent been with a lot of women. I had a western blot done in 2012 and it was negative for type 1 and 2 for herpes. Since then ive only slept with 1 woman 3 times i used a condom every time and had oral sex with 6 different women 1 time each. Last oral sex was in March with a las vegas prostitute i got really worried after i did and got tested for everything all came back negative(didnt get tested for herpes though) i had no symptoms for herpes at all. This last june my friend had a cold sore on his lip and he touched it and then touched my phone. I then used my phone and went to the bathroom 45 min later and examined myself could he have given me herpes from this experience? I also had a cut on my genital area when i was examining. Ive always been told herpes dies when it hits the air. Reason why im concerned 10 days later i got a rash on my foreskin that was really red and flaky saw a dermatologist and a PCP both said no herpes only dermatitis. Since then every couple months i will go indoor tanning and that rash will come back and it will be flaky in the same spot on the foreskin no blisters just really red. Ive heard tanning can trigger outbreaks. Every time the rash comes up i go to the dermatologist and they tell me its not herpes. Does what im telling sound anything like it? Is my risk high?? If i have it is indoor tanning causing these flareup rashes that could be herpes? Sorry just extremely nervous.

Sorry also when the rash appears on the foreskin i get a burning sensation in the area no tingling or itching. Is this a sign of it? Is it most likely fungal because ive had problems with eczema jock itch and fungal infections in the toenail. Im pretty nervous about this. Also if it is type 1 doesnt type 1 only reoccur every other year or sometimes never?

Your risk is definitely not high.  Good that you have the western blot as a baseline test and that your exposures since then have been very minimal.  There is no risk of you getting herpes due to the incident with your phone and your friend.  Also, herpes would not be described as flaky.  That sounds like it could be more fungal.  It is also good that the dermatologist doesn't think it is herpes - if there was any question, I'm guessing they would have swab tested you.

Type 1 genital infection does recur infrequently and sometimes never, that is correct.

And BTW, tanning beds?  Not good you know, right?

Thank u for getting back to me been a rough couple weeks speaking of tanning I was just diagnosed with melanoma and a piece of my lower back cut out my weird question is this my aunt is a nurse and she has helped me change my bandage and clean the area she has herpes whitlow and didn't wear gloves at all I didn't see any blisters at all what are the odds that she could've transmitted the virus to my back via her fingers? I feel like I'm getting the flu and I know that could be a primary symptom. Am I worrying about nothing?? There is a red mark that itches a little don't know if it's irritation from the bandage.

You are worrying about nothing.  Unless there is an active lesion present on her finger (and a nurse would not be changing a bandage with an obvious whitlow without gloves) she is not infectious to you.  Fingers do not shed virus - the skin is too thick - unless a lesion is present.
I'm sure sorry to hear about your melanoma.
