[Question #4058] SIV

Dear Drs.,
I want to ask a question.  I am seeing a man who does research on monkeys with simian immunodeficiency virus.  I was wondering if that virus is contagious to humans and if I could be at risk of catching something?  Is there anything I should be concerned about if I am physically intimate with him?  Thank you so much.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your question.

There have been a very few reports of humans being infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), in lab personnel working with the virus. The most recent case I am aware of was 25 years ago. No sexually transmitted cases in humans have been known to occur. Even if your potential partner worked with HIV itself, there would be no cause for worry. There is no reason you cannot become sexually involved this him.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
