[Question #5424] Re Question 5418 _syphilis exposure

Hi Dr. Hook.,

This is follow up to question 5418.

As luck would have it, I now have a small red sore on the glans of my penis.  I kept checking my penis and noticed it this afternoon.  It now looks a bit larger and noticeable.  I am now scared.  Does a chancre grow fast once it starts taking form?

Syphilis sores can start as raised areas which then go on to form an open sore -they can enlarge in size as part of the process.  Alternatively, you could have created the area with repeated self examination and given the low risk nature of your exposure, this is the most likely scenario.  You need to be examined and have another blood test.  Do not take antibiotics until you have been examined and tested again as this will only confuse matters further.  EWH

Update - the sore went down significantly which may very well be just an irritation as you noted.  I will wait until first week of June to retest and hopefully put this behind me.

I am confident the result will show that you did not acquire syphilis.  Please share your results with us when you have your results.  EWH---
