[Question #10015] IGG HSV Sensitivity and Reliability Post Reading Reddit Threads

Since my last unprotected encounter, I have been IGG tested for HSV 4 times, the final time at 16 weeks post, and about 6 months post the previous encounter with my last boyfriend. I did not have concerns about this particular partner, just general anxiety. I never had a visible outbreak, just some on and off nerve pins and needles (which would come and go mainly as I would stress about it) for a few weeks and some extra vaginal discharge in urine (which had been going on prior to the encounter) and occurred mainly post sex or when dehydrated, but would never be in underwear and would really only happen once in awhile. Any other discomfort I had I would characterize as normal for my body, as it had started post my IUD (intermittent dryness) which I have already spoken to my doctor about, along with some random stinging that would happen only a few times a day close to my period/ovulation, so no real symptoms of herpes. I only bring up the nerve pain as it mainly occurred below the waist. Any time I’ve been tested I’ve always been negative for both types (<.9) and in my more recent tests since February even lower (<.2). The only reason I ask is that I see some people who even had visible outbreaks have tested negative about 2 years later, and had read that the test (which is obviously not perfect) can miss about 8% of infections for HSV2. As I have had 4 tests done, I would assume that makes the test much more reliable? I just want to check that I am not likely one of those people. With so many confirmed negatives I would really like to avoid going through the process of the western blot just to likely get a negative result, so I just want to be sure I can trust my multiple IGG results.

I think that you are VERY unlikely to be infected with HSV 2.  While it is true that the test misses 8% of HSV 2 infection, you don't have symptoms consistent with HSV 2.  The pins and needles thing doesn't qualify as that is a very general sensation that many people report and the vast majority who tested with me, based on that symptom, test negative.  You could do the herpes western blot if you are still worried, and you can work with your own provider to do that or me.  Sometimes peace of mind is important.  I klnow you would like to avoid that and if you can believe the 4 negative IgG tests, you should!

Thank you for your response, that makes me feel a lot better! I guess what I was mainly wondering was whether that 8% of infections missed was like per test? So it misses 8% of infections per test or 8% of infections in people in general no matter how many tests? I was hoping that having had so many tests done would increase the reliability that I am not one of those 8%. But regardless hearing your take has been very helpful and I do feel between that and the negative results that I can let this go!

That's a great question and I don't have a great answer. I have seen people who had multiple negative tests and were positive on the blot but it is more common with HSV 1.

Okay great thanks! I figured there may not be a ton of research on that but it is good to hear that it is not common, especially with HSV 2. I appreciate your help and reassurance that I can safely trust the IGG results. The blot would be great as extra reassurance but due to cost and difficulty obtaining it/finding a center that can administer the test local to me I didn’t want to go through that if it wasn’t necessary.

Totally understand.  If you do decide at some point that you want the blot, we can get blood drawn and shipped to UW from most anywhere.  But for now, glad you can feel more comfortable with the IgG testing
