[Question #10025] Follow Up to 8577 and 8860 - Cigarette Event

I apologize for returning over a year since my last questions. Received a rolled cigarette from someone who may have had HIV. I had sore throat, sneezing, some post nasal drip at 11 weeks post exposure. Tested 1 week after symptoms with 4th gen lab test, negative. Had another 4th gen lab test 6 weeks after symptoms started (4 months post exposure) which was negative. Then, I had another 4th gen lab test 12 weeks after sore throat started, which was 24 weeks post exposure, which was also negative.

In March of this year I had a few days of watery diarhea, and random bouts of chest acne/folliculitis which went away after using acne body wash.
I just want to confirm that:
1. the multiple tests last year post cigarette event confirm that the sore throat/epididymal cyst symptoms could not have been due to the exposure.
2. If they somehow were due to the exposure, a sufficient time has passed where the P24 or antibody portion would show up on the test that I took. 12 weeks post sypmtpms/24 weeks post exposure.

I apologize for returning but I sincerely thank you for your help.

Welcome back to the Forum although I'm sorry you felt the need.  I suspect you know that your concerns reflect your OCD and that, as already explained by both Dr. Handsfield and me, the event you describe did not put you at any risk for HIV and that your testing conclusively confirms that you did not acquire HIV from your exposure of concern.  Further testing is a waste of time.  There should be no need for additional repetitive questions regarding this encounter.  Should you return, your question may be closed without a reply and without return of your posting fee.

Please stay off the internet as well.  It will only fuel your OCD.  if your concerns return, please re-read your earlier exchanges with Dr. Handsfield and me.    Take care.  EWH

Thank you, Dr. Hook. The only new information from last time was the two additional tests I had at 6 weeks after symptoms started (4 months/17 weeks post exposure) and 12 weeks after symptoms, (24 weeks post exposure/~6 months), both of which were negative and which I suppose were superfluous given that you and Dr. Handsfield already advised that the prior tests were conclusive and that I was not at risk. You are right that my OCD has gotten the best of me lately, and I am continuing to work towards helping that. I will stay off the internet as you also suggest. Thank you very much again.

Thank you Dr. Hook. Just to confirm before the thread is closed, I did not need a RNA test at any point during the 24 weeks of testing, even during the sore throat ?

Thank you for your time and help.

Correct.  A HIC RNA PCR would be an absolute waste of time and money.  You have proven, without a doubt, that you did not acquire HIV from the events you describe.  I encourage you to stop worrying and move forward.

This completes this thread.  Take care.  EWH
