[Question #10039] Alcohol usage an std testing

Doctors I have question about hep b testing and Syphilis testing - specifically the HBcAB, HBsAB, HbsAg, for hep b and for syphilis an EIA or IA treponemal test.  My question is someone who is a chronic drinker - drank almost every day for six months would this impact the accuracy of these tests or can they rely on the negatives that they got?  Thanks in advance.

Welcome back to the Forum.  The answer to your question is quite straight forward.  Alcohol use, no matter how long or how much will not effect the accuracy of blood tests for HIV, hepatitis (b and C) or syphilis.  You can be confident that your alcohol use would not impact your test results.

Reading between the lines, it appears that you remain worried about the accuracy of your tests for HIV, including HIV.  While I do not know the basis for your concerns, I can assure your that your test results are accurate.  I hope this information is helpful to you.  EWH

thank you doctor, I was concerned that chronic drinkers could get inaccurate results based on some articles I had read, I suppose these medical websites are saying this out of sense of caution or theoretical risks - is this the reason because it was sites like web md, or hospital sites - is it just being really overly cautious?  So in your medical opinion my results are accurate and I would not need new HIV, HEP B or syphilis tests - I am fine and my negatives are negatives and the 6 months of drinking every day before I got all these tests are irrelevant - I do not need new ones - mine were accurate?

The reports you have found on the internet are unreliable and overly cautious.  You believe your test results. EWH---

I know we only have three follow ups so last question my drinking six months prior to these tests including I think the day before some of them is irrelevant and I’m negative for hiv, hep b, and Syphilis and do not need to be test again 100% and I can move on then - is this correct - thanks in advance for your help

This statement is repetitive and still correct.  Your tests are reliable and should be believed.  I encourage you to move on.

As you point out, with this 3rd response this thread is complete and will be closed.  Take care.  Please don't worry.  EWH
