[Question #10067] Indirect Herpes transmission

My question is about the transmission of Genital Herpes outside of sexual contact. I am dating someone who has genital herpes and while I am comfortable with the risks associated with it for myself I am very concerned about the possibility of someone in my family contracting it through indirect contact. Can it be passed through surfaces in my home, sheets, utensils, food, books, doorknobs, etc? I appreciate your response to what I understand may be a somewhat paranoid question, but it is something that is causing me some distress and I wanted to get an expert opinion.

No. Herpes is not spread through surfaces in your home or the items that you mention. This is a sexually transmitted infection and that's how it is transmitted. We always recommend that people have their own towels, but outside of that, there are no concerns.
