[Question #10076] Positive Herpes 2 test

My husband was recently diagnosed with genital herpes. He is 59 years old. We hve been married for 9 mo.s and never given me any indication that he would cheat. we are also going thru a move and it is extremely stressful getting ready to move across the country. Is it possible that he has had this in his body for a long time and did not know? Or is there a test that would provide results of timing from the infection. The infection is so slight that it is only a rash and is nearly gone in a week without medication. But the doc at the urgent care swabbed him and 5 days later, the swab test results indicated a positive for herpes. Is it possible that he is lying when he says he hasn't been with anybody but me? Could I be an asymptimatic carrier and given it to him? Could youplease advise me in gaining answers from health care professionals that give limited information?

You definitely need to know the type of herpes he has - HSV 1 or HSV 2.  If the swab was not typed, call and ask that it be typed.
If he is 59, I suspect he's had sex with other people than you in the past, correct?  he could have been infected for a long time.  And you as well.  Have you had a herpes antibody test yourself?

Thank you for your quick response. It was an Urgent Care Center and they did not indicate which one it was. Only that it was "genital herpes." He does not have a primary care Dr. Yesterday he stopped by the Urgent Care office and a nurse  printed out info on "genital herpes" which I assume is HSV2. He told me he has never had a cold sore. I haven't either. Last year, he had a rather large wart on his hand and I wondered if that was caused by a herpes virus. But it did not look like the whitlow rash. It looked like one large white wart and went away by itself. Additionally, his rash was swabbed by the health care professional and that is how it was tested. It hasn't become a blister. It was a very small rash on the shaft of his penis and has diminished in the past few days. Even before he started Valcyclovir, it was going away. He never got a fever or blisters. He did say he had a slight headache last week but he gets those frequently bc he doesn't drink enough water.

I have an apt today to get a blood test that I hope will shed some light on whether or not I have the virus. He suspects he got it from his ex wife who cheated on him many times. But he hadn't had sex with her in at least 6-7 years ago.  wonder if he got it from me. I have had many partners in the past and it could be that I have it but have never had symptoms?

Herpes does not cause warts.
And urgent care may have said that because they think all genital herpes is HSV 2, which it is not.
If the swab was done recently, they may still have the sample to type.
Yes, good idea for you to get tested.
