[Question #10117] HSV Risk Assessment

Hi, I have always used this platform as a trusted reference so thanks for all the information you’ve provided over the years. I would like help assessing my current situation:
For context I am a 27 year old heterosexual male from the US, currently traveling around Europe for the summer. I have no sti history.
I spent the past month in the UK with no sexual experiences, and currently I have been in Amsterdam Netherlands for 5 days. 5 days ago when I first arrived in Amsterdam I went out to a bar dancing and met a local girl and we ended up sleeping together at her place that night. We had sex with condom 3 times (probably about 1 minute duration each time) and I performed cunnilingus and analingus on her and she performed a bj on me. For context she seemed like a nice person, she mentioned having a corporate job somewhere and has been living in Amsterdam for 10 years and originally she is from Brazil, but of course no way to know if she had any stds or HSV.
Yesterday (5 days since the event) I woke up with sore throat and swollen tender lymph nodes in the neck and possible fever although not sure, and today it’s generally the same with no change. I have no other symptoms and no genital lesions or tingling so far but the timing of these symptoms has me worried about HSV2. I don’t think the timeline would match any other STI’s besides HSV, what are your thoughts? Do cold like symptoms usually coincide with OR precede skin lesions for an initial infection episode? I am wondering generally if my symptoms are connected to the sexual experience or if they are just coincidental and could be a minor cold or something. Thanks in advance for the help and any data provided.

Well, at this point, without any genital lesions, it is difficult to say what is going on here, but good for you for using condoms with intercourse with this person.
If you are concerned about having HSV in your throat, then you may wish to go and see a clinician for an exam. If lesions are seen in your throat, please explain this situation, including all aspects of the sexual relationship, and ask for a herpes swab to be done of your throat as well as strep. While I think the risk of you getting HSV orally, it isn't zero and I think it might make you feel better if you were seen by someone in person and carefully evaluated. If you do this, please let us know how it went and any test results that were obtained. And also be sure to ask if a herpes swab is done and is positive, that it be typed (HSV 1 or HSV 2).

Thanks Terri. I will follow your advice and have my throat examined today. A few questions given the timeline and symptoms described:
1. Could HSV1 or HSV2 infection present as sore throat without any mouth or genital lesions?
2. If this was an HSV2 infection, would cold like symptoms come before any lesions or would the lesions be present simultaneously?
3. What do you think the overall risk is from a data perspective for genital or oral HSV1 or HSV2 given the nature of the acts?
4. Are there any other sti's that come to your mind given the circumstances here, or would you be more inclined to suspect a cause that is not an sti, such as strep throat or some other random virus/bacteria I could've come into contact with during my travels so far?
Thanks in advance.

One additional random question: after each of these sexual acts I went to the bathroom and washed my penis and rinsed my mouth with toothpaste, does this provide any mitigation benefit regarding STIs?

1. Could HSV1 or HSV2 infection present as sore throat without any mouth or genital lesions?
It could yes, but less likely
2.
If this was an HSV2 infection, would cold like symptoms come before any
lesions or would the lesions be present simultaneously?
No
3. What do you think the overall risk is from a data perspective for genital or oral HSV1 or HSV2 given the nature of the acts?
I think quite limited but not zero
4.
Are there any other sti's that come to your mind given the
circumstances here, or would you be more inclined to suspect a cause
that is not an sti, such as strep throat or some other random
virus/bacteria I could've come into contact with during my travels so
far?
I would be more likely to think this is an upper respiratory problem, not HSV.
I don't think the washing your penis and rinsing your mouth with toothpaste is going to help much, honestly, at least not the mouth part.
