[Question #10121] Botox / HIV risk

Hello,

I went to a Botox party (1st mistake) the doctor was very disorganized and throwing needles to the side once done. I should have ran. He administered the Botox and we left. Nothing happened with the botox so we went to his office to get a free injection. I felt as he 1 might of used a pre used needle and 2 possibly squirted unused Botox back into the vile to put into my skin. This was my first time getting Botox so I did not know what to expect. The party was April 14th and office visit April 28th.  I got tested with the 4th generation HIV test through vein on May 1sr, June 14 and June 28 all Non reactive. The only thing that came positive was Hepatitis B surface antibody and Hepatitis AAB total. In which the doctor tested further and I had only antibodies for. I just tested at home June 30th and I have a positive UTI. Could this be because I'm really positive for HIV and it's hiding in my body. I tested 8 weeks negative for HIV and waiting for my 3 months mark.  I really hope this is a real forum, I'm sorry if I'm insulting you. Thank you for your time.

Welcome to our Forum.  Thanks for your questions.  I've never been to a "botox party" but the description you provide is disconcerting.  I'm less worried about what happened in the office setting but my advice would be to go to the office for any future treatments.

As far of risk for HIV or hepatitis, you are in the clear.  The results of 4th generation tests for HIV are absolutely conclusive any time more than 6 weeks following an exposure.  Thus both your June 14 and June 28 tests are conclusive and prove that you did not acquire HIV.  Your hepatitis antibody tests are consistent with vaccination for hepatitis A and B.  At this point you can be confident that you did not acquire HIV or hepatitis from the injections you received.  Your results are conclusive.  There is absolutely no reason for further testing related to the injections you describe.

UTIs are not a sign of HIV and your UTI is unrelated to any possible HIV.

please don't worry.  Time to move forward.  EWH

My gyno has me testing at 3 months and 6 month mark. My anxiety has been the worst. So me having a UTI ( which I also never had) will not affect my HIV test in the future. I'm sorry for repeating it again. It's a scary period in my life. I feel like this doctor was not practicing the best sanitary conditions and definitely diluting his "Botox" I was afraid of contaminated blood from he mystery vile that was reused on all the patients and myself ... I think I will age gracefully from now on. Thank you

Advice to test for HIV at 3 and 6 months is out of date.  Results at 6 weeks (42-45 days) is absolutely conclusive.

Your UTI will have no effect on your HIV test and recently acquired HIV in no way affects the accuracy of tests for HIV.

Please don't worry.  EWH

last question what do you mean by this "recently acquired HIV in no way affects the accuracy of tests for HIV" and to close I thank you for your response and time.

You can discard that last question because we can ask only 2 following afterwards.. when taking the UTI test only the window for leuktpcydes turned purple indicating positive.. and that deals with the white blood cells.. any connection with HIV. Thanks again

Apologies for the typo.  I meant to write that a recently acquired UTI has no effect on the accuracy of testing for HIV, nor does recently acquired HIV effect risk for, or the accuracy of diagnosis of UTI.

No, no connection between the fact that only the test for white blood cells was posiitve.

Please don't worry.  I assure you, you did not get HIV from the injections you received.  No need for further testing.

This completes this thread.  Take care.  Please don't worry.  EWH

Hello Dr. Hook,

Im not sure if I could ask another question, but I'll write it and if there is no response I understand...I'm happy to pay again to get it answered..  I had symptoms like a pain in my stomach for a week, a cold, cough the first 4-6 ish weeks, but read through the forums that if there are symptoms most likely the infection would of picked up on the 4th generation vein test...correct??

I'm also training for a marathon..would training affect the virus form showing on a 4 th generation test. Since I'm running and keeping up with my fitness. Would the virus be suppressed because of my exercise regimen? Thank you again and again. I'm just waiting for my 3 months mark to get tested to get some piece of mind.

Thank you-

Final Responses

Cough is typically not a sign of recently acquired HIV and, more importantly, had these symptoms been due to HIV, your tests certainly would have been positive.

Physical exercise, including training for a marathon, would not have any impact on the ability of blood tests to detect HIV, had you acquired it.

Once again, I encourage you to believe you did not get HIV through the events you describe.  Believe your tests- they are conclusive.   There is no need for further testing.   It is time to put these concerns behind you.  EWH
