[Question #10148] Anal HSV + HPV

Male Dxed w/HPV + HSV2 anally for both (swab). Taking supp. Valtrex daily (500mg). Given outbreak location, is likelihood of asymptomatic transmission lower for things like vaginal sex? Will I shed from my penis and thus a condom is recommended? For recurrent outbreak, should I boost my dosage to 2X daily?

Yes, you will also shed virus from the penis. Even though your outbreak was anal. These areas are both in the same nerve group so the virus can travel on any of the nerves in that group to get to the surface of the skin.
For recurrences, I find that people do really well treating with the cold sore dosing which is 2 grams all at once and then 2 grams 12 hours later.

Thanks, Terri. Based on what I've read from you and others, with condom + daily suppression transmission risk is dramatically reduced and moreso as time goes on, correct? For the 2 grams + 2 grams should I plan to just take 4 pills (500 mg each) two times out of my suppressive stock or get a different prescription? Appreciate the prompt reply!!!

You may need a separate prescription to have enough meds on board so you don't run out. I would contact your prescriber and explain the situation and ask for a different script to use with recurrences. See how it all works for you - many people who take this dose at the very first symptoms of an outbreak can abort the outbreak entirely.
