[Question #10198] Question #2612

The answer to Question #2612 appears to be a bit unclear and ambiguous. It states, "As a generalization this statement makes sense and is one I would agree with." However, later on it states: "Conversely, in some places $100 has a lot more buying power than others," appearing to indicate that a $100 CSW by appointment has a higher likelihood of having HIV or any other STD than a bar pickup. With the caveat that I understand that you cannot be certain and give a definitive answer, based on your expert medical opinion and what you think, would you generally agree that bar pickups have a higher likelihood of having HIV or any other STD than a $100 CSW by appointment or a massage parlor CSW?

Welcome to the Forum.  I'm not sure why you are asking about a question which is nearly 8 years old.  The limitations of the Forum are such that I would have to scroll through all of the more than 7000 questions since 2612 to review it and I am not inclined to do that.

I think youhave misunderstood the reply.  There are a wide variety of CSWs.  In any given environment, those who charge higher fees often work by appointment, have fewer partners, have more control over the circumstances of their client interactions and take better care of their sexual health (i.e. have more check-ups) than the lowest rungs of CSWs who work the streets (or bars) have more partners, have less control over their exposures and have less access to healthcare.   Our Forum serves clients from all over the world.  As a result a "high priced" CSW in one part of the world may only cost what a client might pay a "low priced" CSW in another part of the world.

As for casual partners met in bars where drinking and other activities may hamper decision making, persons who tend to "pick up" causal, one-night-stand partners may not make good decisions and may not practice optimal sexual health care and prevention measures.  As a result, such persons may actually have higher STI rates than CSWs

I hope this answers your questions.  If not, please ask the question directly.  EWH

This question was previously asked on a different forum on a different website: bar pickups have a higher likelihood of having HIV or any other STD than a $100 CSW by appointment or a massage parlor CSW, right?

Dr. H. Hunter Handsfield answered: "Maybe, yes.  But there are no data to be certain.  That's why I cannot give you a definite answer."

My only question is this: I understand that you cannot be certain and give a definite answer.  However, if you have to choose or guess based on your expert medical opinion and what you think, you would agree that bar pickups have a higher likelihood of having HIV or any other STD than a $100 CSW by appointment or a massage parlor CSW, right?

I presume you are trying to assess your risk of acquiring HIV or some other STI either from an interaction with a commercial sex or from an interaction with someone who are you meet and embark on a one night stand with in a bar.  This is gamesmanship, and I choose not to participate in.  The reasoning that I provided above is what I have to say on the subject.  Most CSWs do not have HIV or other STIs, nor do most casual partners.  Even when a partner is infected, most single unprotected exposures do not result in infection. Rather than try to guess the odds of infection, i’ll point out that in either setting, there is much that can be done to reduce the risk of acquisition of infection. This includes inquiring of your partner as to their STI history, and when they were last checked. In addition, of course, correct and consistent condom use reduces the risk of infection to virtually zero. EWH ---
