[Question #10245] Terri followup (vaccine)

Hi Terri,
Just letting you know that I think the system closed the exchange before I finished all my follow-up questions. I'm not sure if this is cheating, but my last question was about something unrelated: when do you think there will be a vaccine or cure for herpes, oral and genital? Is 10 years from now too optimistic?
Thanks!

oh, I'm so sorry about that. I suspect there may be a treatment vaccine within the next 10 years and possibly gene editing for HSV as well. Lots of interesting things on the horizon for herpes right now.
Other questions?
Terri

No problem! I actually do have another question (which is unrelated to this one). My girlfriend just gave me oral hsv1. I don't expect that we'll be breaking up any time soon, but I am worried about infecting future partners. If I am totally asymptomatic, and date someone without oral herpes for a year, is there any data on the odds of giving them oral herpes?

BTW the way, I checked your previous post and you were able to post three times, which is what we offer on this site.
And you know that your partner now gave you new HSV 1 because you had a negative IgG test and a positive swab test? That's the only way one can know that they have a new infection.
---If you start seeing someone who tests negative for HSV 1, and you have oral HSV 1, within the next year, there is some risk of you giving them oral herpes. We don't have any statistics about that, I'm afraid.

Oh, sorry about that! I must have misunderstood. Actually I am exaggerating a little bit. I haven’t gotten tested yet, but assume I have it. My girlfriend just got diagnosed with a positive swab, and we regularly kissed when she had a cold sore. Neither of us knew it was a cold sore until her friend pointed it out. I think I might get western blot after a few months, just to be sure.
So, I guess I don’t know for sure that I have it. If I do test positive, do you think the risk of transmitting it without symptoms is high enough that I should disclose to future partners? I guess it’s hard to know if there isn’t any data.
