[Question #10267] STD Transmission

Hello,
I just had a procedure called anal skin lightening.  It’s where gels are massaged into the anal area for about 20min to lightening the skin.  My concern is the bottles with the gel, they would just grab with their hands during the procedure. I’m afraid bc they use the same bottles with each person that an STD could be transmitted this way.  They wore gloves and I asked about sanitation, and she said they sanitize all bottles after each client.  I’m still paranoid that an STD could have been transmitted this way, what are the odds of this and should I be worried? She said she had 2 clients before me on this day.

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions. I am not familiar with the chemicals used for procedures such as the one you describe but typically formulations used in this way contain preservative antiseptic chemicals to kill any bacteria or viruses which might accidently get into the bottle.  As for the outside of the bottle, STIs including HIV are never transmitted through transfer of infectious material from person to person on the hands.  Further, bacteria and viruses do not survive on inanimate objects such as the outside of bottles or countertops.  While I agree with your distaste at their procedures and wish they would use single dose containers for their treatments, I see no risk here.  No need for concern, no need for testing.  EWH---

Okay thank you for your response and reassurance.  They did mention the products were organic, so chemical free. Would this change any risk?

Thanks for the additional information however that does not change my assessment.  I would not worry.  EWH ---
