[Question #10288] HSV2 and HIV Risk

Hello,

I recently had a sexual encounter at a massage parlour in the states. I received no oral sex and did not kiss. Only thing I did was exchange in sexual intercourse. Prior to me putting my penis in the SW she put on a condom for me.

Once the condom was on we had intercourse in different positions for approximately five mins. When I pulled out, the condom appeared to be intact and was removed by the SW. After this she cleaned me with cleaning wipes.

I right away left from there and went to a gas station and washed myself with soap down there.

My question is, I’ve been super anxious about this and scared about getting HSV 2 on the genitals and HIV.

What are my chances of getting these things from this encounter?

I also wanted to ask if I need to get tested for HSV 2 and HIV?

The encounter was this past Thursday.

I also wanted to say I messed up like this four years ago and was stressed out about it just like this time. I was depressed for two years thinking I had something despite the negative tests. I felt a mild fever the other day and my anxiety went through the roof and I thought it was because I acquired HSV 2 or HIV. I feel better a day later (today) after taking some tylonel.

Please tell me if I’m okay and the chances of aquiring something from this one sexual act which was done with condom on.

Thank you,

As per your advice I will test or not test.

Hello experts, I see others questions being answered today and mine has not been answered. I’m getting very very anxious. Can you please answer my questions as well.

I would be happy to tell you that you are OK!  I think your risk of acquiring HSV 2 at this encounter is very close to zero.  You did all the right things - used a condom for intercourse, checked the status of the condom after intercourse and found it to be intact, and then washed your genitalia with soap.  Soap is very effective at reducing the risk of transmission of HSV 2 because the job of soap is to destroy lipids, and the herpes virus is surrounded by a lip layer.  Soap will destroy the lip layer, should there be any herpes around, causing the virus to completely fall apart and present no risk for transmission.
I don't recommend that you test because this particular IgG test has so many false positives.  If you just can't stand not knowing for certain, you should only do the herpes western blot, and I could help you with that.  But you would need to wait 12 weeks after a concerning encounter to do that.
But again, I think there is no need to test - your cautious behaviors were terrific!
I also don't think you need to get tested for HIV.
Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you for your reply. That helps to ease my anxiety. I have been closely paying attention to my penis and testicles for signs and symptoms of anything related to HSV.

Today I thought I noticed a pus forming and then checked two mins later and could not find anything on the testicles.

1. Given the exposure, do you think I possibly could get HSV on my testicles?

2. Since the encounter I have been feeling every little sensation down there making me think the worst.

3. I only washed my penis with soap but did not wash my testicles right after the exposure. Can this increase my chances for HSV on the testicles?

4. The condom was intact and didn’t appear to be ripped but I’m not sure about the tip of the condom as I didn’t see it when the SCW took it off. However the shaft part of condom was fully intact and had to be removed with force. Chances of condoms ripping from the tip?

5. Can I stop worrying about the HsV and any other STI’s and continue regular intercourse with my partner without the worry of passing something?

6. I’m on my day three now after the encounter. No symptoms other than minor cold like symptoms right now. Could these be due to a STI or HSV infection?

1.  I do not. The scrotum skin is quite thick, which makes it far less vulnerable to infection
2.  Yes, that's so common when people have an encounter that concerns them.  I would encourage you to try to focus on other things rather than sensations around the genitals
3.  It does not increase your chance of testicular infection, per the above answer #1
4.  That's extremely unlikely, and I do think if it had ripped at the tip, the rip would have continued up the shaft and you would have noticed
5.  Yes, I believe that you can stop worrying about HSV and continue to have sex with your partner.  If you have not developed any symptoms within ten days after the encounter, that is more evidence that you did not acquire any STI
6.  Cold symptoms are not part of herpes infections.

Thank you for that :) I will put my mind to ease now and continue to focus on life and continue to have intercourse with my partner. Before you close this thread I just had one last question.

1. I’m on day five after the encounter. I known you said ten days. If I haven’t devolved any symptoms now and it’s been five days, should I consider myself in the clear or wait the ten days?

2. On average, if I was infected would I have felt the symptoms by now?

1.  I think you should wait another 5 days, just to be very cautious
2.  The average time from infection to development of symptoms is 5.5 days.
