[Question #10307] Immune System Worry

Probably anxiety driven but causing me stress. 6 months ago I let a massage interaction go too far. Naked frottage, panties in the way but they may have slid over at times, me going down on her a tiny bit, mutual hand. No penetration or oral on me. But she did insert her finger into my anus at one point and I know she fingered herself at some point prior. Not even sure it was the same finger. My worry is that at 3 weeks or so post exposure I got sick. Included sore throat, congestion, general body sickness. None of those I would describe as overly severe compared to a normal flu. Worrisome part was I had a fever, one night only, broke in bed and was gone and didn't register really high.. and then a small itchy rash almost like a heat rash below my rib cage, also only lasted a day and gone. Recovered in a week but then 2 weeks later my wife got a weird more wide body rash. Hers took on a variety of looks, more dry patches mixed in and very itchy. She never complained of any other symptoms and saw two skin doctors that just thought allergies or something. Prescribed creams and eventually went away, didn't come back. But it was stubborn and wasn't fully gone for 2 months. Not sure if any of that sounds like ARS? From an answer on here I was able to put this out of my head as no risk and went on normal. Now months later I got a cold about 4 weeks ago, sore throat and cough, lasted in that form for a little over a week and mostly got better but just a few minor things have persisted. The main sore throat and cough is gone and alot of the days I feel like Im pretty much better, but at night and when I first wake up this little tickle remains. Then just some days of low energy, and that body feeling of a cold either just starting or ending. Even right now I feel mostly fine but with a slight tickle feeling. Can't seem to fully shake it so thinking of ordering a home test, think that's needed? What odds am I looking at this is hiv?

Welcome to our forum. Thanks for your questions. I’ll be glad to comment.
The encounter you describe is very low, virtually no risk. The only activity that you describe with even a theoretical risk got HIV is when you performed brief cunnilingus on her. Statistically it is highly unlikely that your partner had HIV, and if she did the risk of acquiring HIV through performance of unprotected cunnilingus is minuscule. While the flu like illness you describe has some of the characteristics of the ARS and occurred within the time frame when ARS occurs, when persons with such illnesses who are at risk for HIV are studied, less than one percent of them turn to be experiencing the ARS. The remainder having common community acquired, viral illnesses, including influenza and Covid 19. Similarly, your wife, is it virtually no risk for HIV and the rash and accompanying symptoms you described really do not suggest HIV.
The likelihood that your symptoms are due to HIV is close to zero and, in my opinion, do not necessarily require testing. That said, if your symptoms were due to HIV, a test would certainly be positive and my sense is that at this time a negative test might be reassuring. Testing is always a personal choice.
I hope this perspective is helpful to you. Personally, I would not be worried in the least. EWH.

Hey Doctor, your reassurance is certainly helpful and appreciated. I did however not know that oral carried any HIV risk, and certainly not cunnilingus, when you say miniscule.. what are we talking? I was initially more worried about her fingering her vagina and then potentially my anus with the same finger. I guess just the persistence of this cold got me worried. Like even now, the sore throat is gone and I feel mostly fine, just a little bit of lingering body aches and feeling a touch run down. Very minor though so I guess this could be more life stress and anxiety caused. Still trying to decide if I will order a test.

If you were partner had HIV, which is unlikely, the estimated risk of you requiring HIV from performing cunnilingus on her is less than one in 10,000. That’s like performing cunnilingus on an HIV infected person once daily for more than 27 years. It is really not something to be worried about. EWH ---

Well I've certainly tried to have your advice let me not worry. I even read on here a recent response from Dr Handsfield that there has never been a proven cunnilingus caused case. It also mentioned a theoretical risk from receiving a BJ, something like 1 in 20,000. I wasn't aware saliva and mouth was a risk for HIV anyway... It got me thinking that I did have 2 girls I briefly saw give me a BJ maybe 2 years back. Both heterosexual girls in their 20's, so certainly not what Id consider much risk of having it, but still unknown status I guess. Those would obviously cut out my ARS symptom worries from the encounter 6 months ago but the problem is these low level lingering symptoms won't seem to go away. The main sore throat and cough from 6 weeks ago has been gone for 4-5 weeks now. But can't seem to shake the slightly irritated feeling on the sides of my tongue and slightly swollen neck glands under my jaw. Almost the feeling like when your about to get a sore throat.. but doesn't turn into a full sore throat. Had a night with some sweats a few nights ago and maybe the odd fatigue...but then at times I have felt quite good and almost like I am about to feel back to normal but just can't seem to fully get there. Another thing is I've had irritated skin around my eyes and watering quite a bit. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning there is some of that white substance in the eyelash area. This has been an on and off issue I thought was allergies and was already happening around the exposure 6 months ago so I wasn't relating it at first. but now that I'm thinking about the BJ's from a couple years ago, maybe? Do any of these somewhat slight lingering symptoms sounds like HIV to you? I will try to get a test here, just scared and it's tricky as my wife and I now share a doctor as we've trying for a baby the last few months

Hi, really think you are over reacting. Your symptoms are in no way suggestive of HIV-either the ARS or otherwise. I also however, realize that you were having a hard time shaking your concerns. Therefore the best way to address these concerns is to get tested. That does not have to be done by your doctor. You can go to my local health department and get confidential testing at little or no cost. EWH ---
