[Question #10360] HSV2 IgG positive

Hi!
I recently got an STD panel done just for a baseline because my last one was done in 2020 and it was negative for all STDs including HSV1 and HSV2. Since then I have had 5 partners, 4 of which i used condoms every time and for the one partner, we were not using condoms but he said he was tested for STDs and was negative and only had a few partners previously (the last time I was with him was in 2021 and we only got together a handful of times). Each of the partners I was with never overlapped, I was just with specifically one at a time. None of my partners have ever exhibited any symptoms or mentioned a positive herpes test. All my results were negative except a HSV2 index value of 1.71. This panel only tested for HSV2, not HSV1. I have never had any symptoms and read that these tests are unreliable and should only be done when people are showing symptoms or have been with partners that have HSV2. What should I make of this test result and should I get further testing done?

You should absolutely get a confirmatory test for this low positive result.  The best test is the herpes western blot done only at the University of Washington.  You can work with your own provider to get this test or with me at westoverheights.com.  You will need the kit from UW, and you can start by ordering it at 206-685-6066.  There is an excellent chance, probably 75%, that this is a false positive.

Hi Terri,

Thank you so much for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. Ok I think that is my next step is to get the Western Blot. Out of curiosity how long do those results usually take to come back? And also one last question. If I were to have been infected back in 2021, would my index value be a lot higher? Thank you again for providing this platform for people to ask questions.

The whole thing, from the time you order the kit to getting results could be 2-4 weeks, depending on how quickly you do everything.
It is likely that your index value would be higher but I've seen low ones in people infected for quite a while.
