[Question #10399] Deep kissing

In previous responses to my questions, you have covered everything except deep kissing.  Is deep kissing with tongue insertion STD free?  In some post it states kissing is STD free and others it states low risk.  Please advise.

Welcome back, but sorry you found it necessary. Your previous questions did include statements that saliva doesn't transmit HIV or other STDs, and my closing comment last time included a statement about not being at significant risk for HIV and other STDs until and unless you have unprotected vaginal or anal sex. These at least come close to reassurance about kissing!

Kissing, deep or otherwise, is generally considered entirely risk free. Syphilis can be transmitted by kissing, but this is extremely rare -- and syphilis is largely limited (in the US) to men who have sex with other men. And probably some cases of oral gonorrhea are transmitted by kissing, but for some reason this apparently only occurs MSM (in whom kissing often may be more vigorous or prolonged). There has never been a case of HIV known to be transmitted by kissing, and swallowing HIV infected blood or secretions carries little or no risk. You can safely be confident that the sorts of exposures you describe -- like strip club events without intercourse -- do not put you at significant risk for anything even if kissing is involved. Such events need not be followed by STD/HIV testing or by any change in sexual practices with your wife or regular partner. But of course you are free to be tested anyway if you remain concerned even despite little or no risk.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
