[Question #10442] STI from lubrificant tube from the drug store.

Hello, my question is the following: I bought one of these tubes of lubricant at a pharmacy (Drug Store). When I got home, I removed the seal, washed the tube with soap and ended up trying to put it in my anus (it has some sort of phallic shape). I had no contact with anyone and was alone at home. Am I at risk for an STI (syphilis, hepatitis, or something like that) ? My fear is that someone tried to do the same thing before me and returned same the tube of lubricant to the pharmacy, or someone touched the tube with sexual fluids on hands. One hour passed between the purchase and the moment I tried to put it in my anus.

Welcome back to the Forum.  Insertion of the tube into your rectum did not put you at risk for HIV or any other STI.   No STIs, including HIV are transmitted from person to person either by contaminated inanimate objects like the tube you mention, nor by transfer of infected genital secretions from person to person on someone's hands.  This was a no risk event- no need for concern, no need for testing of any sort.  EWH---

One last question: does the fact that I washed the tube with dish detergent instead of bactericidal soap or something like that make any difference in terms of the possibility of contamination? Thank you very much in advance for your answers and for the excellent work you do.

There was really no meaningful risk of contamination with STI pathogens even without washing.  Washing with either regular soap (which is anti-bacterial) or specifically antibacterial soap will further reduce the virtually no-existent risk of contamination.  Adding the word "antibacterial" to a soap label is a marketing gimmick.  EWH---

The Last question was incomplete... The effect of washing with detergent or dishwasher brings the same effect? In the meaning of mitigate the virtual risk that doesn't exist in practice? Thank you so much

Ye it is.

Asyou know, we provide up to three responses to each client's questions.  This response will complete this thread.  Take care.  EWH
