[Question #10448] HIV blood during lap dance.

Hi Drs,
Had a lap dance from stripper, and afterwards noticed what I think was some dried blood on the outside of my tan shorts around the zipper area afterwards. Blood did not seem to go through shorts, looked normal on inside of shorts. Took shorts off after going to car (didn’t touch bloody area), threw shorts away, then showered when got home afterwards. Assume no risk of HIV or STD from this encounter? Any other risk for another blood borne illness?

Worried back to the Forum. I'll be glad to provide some information. Let me start with the fact that most strippers, even those involved in commercial sex work, do not have HIV or even STIs. Further, even if they do, most unprotected sexual exposures to infected partners do not lead to infection.
In your case, the encounter you describe did not put you at risk for any STI, including HIV. Your shorts were on and STIs, including HIV are not transmitted through cloth/material. For that matter, transmission does not occur from contaminated inanimate objects when they contact the skin of an uninfected person. I see no reason for concern related to the events you describe. There is no reason for testing either. Please don't worry. EWH

Thanks Dr Hook.
Last question, even if the blood got “through” the shorts some how it wouldn’t have mattered since I had boxers on as well?

HIV is not passed through clothing material. If present, the virus would adhere to the material. There has never been a case of HIV acquired from passage of the virus through clothing, no matter how wet the clothing became with either blood or genital secretions. Please don't worry. EWH---
