[Question #10476] How do I know I did not get an STI from a new toy?

My wife and I were virgins when we married decades ago, and have never had sexual encounters with anyone outside our marriage. We have lived in blissful unconcern about STIs. I recently purchased a penis stroker that was made in China. On the exterior of the factory-sealed package were instructions in English to "wash before using". There were no directions to disinfect before using, but I later found a reference to disinfecting in the predominantly Chinese mini pamphlet inside the box. In my eagerness to try out this toy, I had rinsed it thoroughly but had not stopped to disinfect it first. Was this was a terrible mistake? My one and only use of the non-disinfected toy was over 3 weeks ago. Soon after this one use of the toy, I was struck with the horror that I could possibly have had contact with an STI organism IF there was malicious intent in the manufacturing process. The outer shell holding the sleeve is hard plastic. The sleeve material is TPE. Neither my wife nor I now, or at any time prior, have had any symptoms of STI infection, but the uncertainty of contracting one has forced us to abstain from sexual activities - even kissing. We are extremely distressed, and we wish to return to our normal active monogamous sex life as soon as we can be free of STI concern. Please advise on how we should proceed. Our primary care doctor is currently on vacation for several more weeks.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment.
You are not at risk for ANY STI, including HIV from the events you describe. STIs, including HIV are fragile organisms which are not transmitted through contact with inanimate objects unless the contamination of the object is immediate (i.e.. used immediately on one person after another). The "precautions" on the package insert are cautionary and likely designed to protect the manufacturer but in no way reflect the facts and science of STI, including HIV transmission. The instructions to even "wash before using" are, in my opinion, gratuitous in terms of STI transmission.
Any risk of STI/HIV from the events you describe are a non-issue and there is absolutely NO reason for concern. I would not be worried in the least, I see no reason to abstain from unprotected se with your wife, and, if you are so inclined, see no reason for you not to use your new "toy"
There is no reason for testing or concern. EWH
