[Question #10506] Condom Broke

Hi Doctor,
I was in Thailand (Patayya) yesterday with an escort (met in a bar) of Uzbek origin. I was using condom and consistently checked it, but at some point of time it broke (my guess is  I was exposed for about 45-50 seconds).

I asked her about her status and language was obviously a barrier, but she said she gets tested every month (she mentioned "finger,  speed" which I believe is for the rapid HIV, and also mentioned "vaginal swab". Since I was freaking out she has agreed to go for a rapid 4 gen test tomorrow.

Question - if the test comes out negative, strictly from HIV perspective, what should be the course of action? (I will get tested for Gonorhea and Claymedia at the 10 day mark). I am thinking about unprotected intercourse with my regular partner (at some point of time).
Thanks,

You know from your many previous forum discussions that this was minimal risk, even if your partner has HIV. In my view, it was inappropriate for you to insist she be retested for HIV. And you also know the answer to your specific question:  if she tests negative for HIV, you do not need an HIV test. Gonorrhea/chlamydia testing is optional, but if you're going to do it, you needn't wait 10 days. Urine testing is valid 4-5 days after exposure.

Hi Doctor,
We both had Alere Gen 4 ag/ab RAPID FINGER PRICK test, and it was negative. I guess time to move on. I understand that it may be a tough one to answer, (putting yourself in my shoes if you may) do I need to wait before I resume (unprotected) relationship with my regular partner?
Thanks,

I see no reason for you to wait to have sex with your regular partner.---

Hi Doctor,
I understand that it wasn't required and I also understand that the results are not definitive at 26 days, but I went for a Gen 4 ag/ab test in a lab and it came negative. The only thing is that for HIV 1 it has both Antigen and Antibody, but only H1V 2 Antibody (no Antigen). Is that right ?

Correct, but at at this time the antibody component of the test is conclusive for HIV2 all by itself. You can be completely sure you have neither HIV1 nor HIV2.

That concludes this thread. You can move on with no further worry! I hope the discussion has been helpful. Best wishes and stay safe.
