[Question #10560] HSV 1/2 risk?

Good morning. 38 year old Caucasian female with hx of HSV1 cold sores since childhood, but very few outbreaks. Hyperfocused on an exposure I had in 2014 for some ridiculous reason, where a partner with a healed/scabbed over cold sore performed oral sex one of many times during our 15 month relationship. Extremely low risk partners (heterosexual men with low partner counts), and only 3 of them in the last 10 years. Have always asked flat out, up front about STD status as I feel it's important. I have never had sores, lesions, lacerations, discomfort of ANY kind in ten years that would suggest HSV1 or HSV2 (which would not have been from this encounter, I totally understand). Should I just get the bloody PCR blood test for peace of mind over this, or let this go given absolutely zero outbreaks or concerns in ten years time? Starting a relationship with a new partner which is likely the reasoning for the clearly ridiculous hyper focus and panicking.

I feel like my question was super convoluted. Bottom line, I have been sexually active with 3 partners in 10 years. I have had zero genital herpes symptoms or outbreaks. All three relationships were long term (4 months plus) and none of my partners have ever reported herpes symptoms of any kind from me. I'm reading the CDC doesnt even recommend herpes testing really anymore unless you HAVE symptoms given the false positives and anxiety. I know not all people show symptoms, but wouldn't it be totally wild to go this long and have literally NOTHING and three partners with dozens and dozens of sexual episodes, vaginal and oral, and they also never have outbreaks? I don't want to test if I don't have to.

If the concern is the scabbed over cold sore and you've had cold sores since childhood, the chances of you getting it in a new location is extremely low! I've seen that happen once in 40 years of practice. I would not suggest testing. YOu'll be positive for HSV 1
And never, ever do a PCR blood test. This virus is not in your blood stream.

Thanks a ton Terri, I'm sorry--PCR was not the correct term. I was considering just getting tested for both HSV1 and HSV2 as I do not believe I ever have, but given I've had limited, long term partners and no symptoms of genital herpes ever, I'm reading more and more that testing is really advised against, which you're also saying. With no symptoms/outbreaks of either genital HSV 1 or HSV2 and no reports from previous partners of any issues, my guess would be that I should continue to be safely sexually active, unprotected in only monogamous relationships and put this behind me?

I would completely agree with you. If these tests were really accurate, we would recommend them but they are not and give false positive results often.
