[Question #10708] HIV Question

Hello doctors, thank you for all you do. I just had a question about an exposure I had over a year ago. I have browsed this website and forum over and over again and take all the info you supply to other users which gives me a great deal of confidence that it was a low risk exposure (one time encounter with broken condom). I’ve had several negative tests all well after the window period and the most recent a year and a few days after the exposure. I only have a few questions and I’m hoping to get some info because no other doctors seem to have an answer. Straight to questions.
Have you ever heard of someone experiencing bubbles in urine from HIV? I’ve done research and I’ve never seen someone complain of this symptom in your forum or else where. This is the only “symptom” I have to date that showed up about 4 months post exposure and hasn’t gone away and no kidney doctors have an answer.
Has there ever been a case ever where someone tests negative post 1 year and then tests positive down the road?
I have been trying to put this behind me but my wife and I are trying to conceive a baby and the continuous bubbles in urine give me concern in her health and our potential child’s.

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment
Bubbles in the urine are normal for many people. There can be associated with dehydration which causes the urine to be a bit more concentrated than normal, interaction of chemicals in the urine with things already in the toilet or toilet water, and are sometimes unexplained. There is no published association or bubbles in the urine with HIV or any other STI.
Your tests are conclusive. Persons with negative tests any time more than 6 weeks following an exposure remain negative. There are no instances in which persons with negative tests more than 6 weeks following an exposure then go on to develop positive tests. You are in the clear and do not need further testing.
Given your negative tests, nothing about your exposure over a year ago puts you or your wife at risk for problems with your plans to have a baby. Put your encounter a year ago behind you and move forward without concern. EWH

Dr. Hook,
Thank you for your reply and for the information. Based off what I have read on the forum it is also safe to say that even if the bubbles were indicative of HIV (which you stated are not a typical symptom) my tests would have been positive if that was cause correct?
I am glad that I can now move forward without stress. I hope you enjoy the holidays. Thank you

You are correct in your assessment, although I want to once again emphasize that the appearance of bubbles in the urine is not at all abnormal and certainly is not characteristic of HIV.
I hope the information I have provided will help you to move forward without concern. Happy Holidays EWH.

I am aware each post only gets 3 responses so this will be my last response and deals with a new issue. I went to the strip club with friends last weekend and received a lap dance. She was wearing bottoms but we both touched each other and at some point she had touched my bare penis but her bottoms remained on. I only touched her through her underwear. Fast forward to today I had not noticed any symptoms or anything. I masturbated and afterwards I noticed what looked like a scrape or cut at the bottom of my shaft. I am freaking out a bit that this could be a herpes lesion or sore but I never noticed any blisters or discomfort and only noticed after masturbation so I am hoping it is nothing. Just wanted to get your thoughts and if you think I should get this lesion or cut swabbed. If I need to repay to have this in a different post that is no issue. Thank you

I just want to add that this is the 3rd consecutive day I have masturbated so I am hoping this is just a friction burn/cut. I don’t feel any burning or itching from the area. I do have a sore throat though but no fever and no swollen lymph nodes. I will most likely just go to urgent care for peace of mind to see if they believe it needs to be swabbed but like I said just wanted an expert opinion as well as some doctors at urgent cares are not up to date with current symptoms/information of STI’s

STIs, including herpes are NOT transmitted through material/clothing, even when the clothing becomes wet with genital secretions. What you describe was a completely no risk event. Further, the penile scrape you describe sounds nothing like herpes. OTOH, what you describe sounds very much like the sort of friction mark that follows repeated masturbation. I would have no concerns and would not hesitate to have unprotected sex with my regular partner because of the area you describe.
As you know, this completes this thread which will be closed shortly. EWH
