[Question #10710] HSV

Hi,
I currently have an ongoing issue with the following symptoms.

1. Redness on penis head.
To paint a picture it started of as 1 red mark on penis head. As time has went on this comes and goes and at different areas of the penis head especially after masterbation (never had this issue before). I have never seen any blisters, ulcers, scabbing. The redness is always flush to the skin. The marks on penis head have never caused any discomfort at all.

2. Constant dull aches in upper back and sides of body.

I have carried out a full panel test which everything came back negative. No herpes test was carried out due no "active lessions"

This marks on penis come and go almost every week and sometimes takes a week for the redness to go away.

These symptoms ( red marks and body aches) started 2-3 months after the potential exposure which was protected intercourse

Im assuming its nearly impossible to get HSV on penis head if it was covered by condom?

The dull aches are pretty much permanent since they started would this be a symptom of herpes?

The symptoms that you describe on the head of the penis do not sound at all like herpes to me.  They do sound like a condition called balanitis, which is usually caused by a fungal infection.  Please look on the internet at pictures of balanitis to see if these pictures match your symptoms.

Have you consulted a health care provider about these red marks on the head of your penis?

Condoms reduce transmission of herpes from females to males by 65%.  I don't know if your partners are female or not, BTW.  We don't have male to male information about condom use but it would be similar.

Hi Terri,
Thanks for the quick response.
Yes, I have compared pictures with STDs and also Balantis.

I can say it does look alot more like Balantis. It seems like the skin is breaking on the head after having an erection or masterbation.

My concern is it always reoccurring and dont know if balantis would be so reoccurring.

Secondly my concern is the pains(not muscle pain more like strain pain) im getting around my body most particularly middle upper back and sides of body which never seem to go away fully. Would this be something that herpes virus could cause?

I have not been able to show a medical professional as these marks just come and go and unfortunately it can take several days to get an actual appointment

Herpes would be very unlikely to cause the kind of pain you are describing here.
And the middle upper back is not in the same nerve group as the genitals so that's another reason I doubt the pain is due to herpes.
You could go to an urgent care same day clinic to be seen about the red marks, rather than your PCP, to insure that you are seen in a timely way

Hi Terry,

Im from the UK so everything is appointment based only.

The only option i have really is a self sample route which would either be take a swab of the red mark myself or take a small blood sample which both are tested at lab via postal service.

What would you consider the most common symptoms prior too and during  genital herpes outbreak would be?

When you speak about "nerve group" if i indeed had genital herpes what kind of pain/feeling/symptoms would i expext from that specific nerve group?

The thing you would want to look for are water blisters, usually found on the shaft of the penis, that would break open, ulcerate and scab over.  Definitely not something flush with ths surface of the skin as you describe it to be.  Also, herpes would not come as often as what you describe.
I supposed that you could send a blood sample through the mail to a lab that does that kind of testing, if that would help you feel reassured.  However, there are false positives on these herpes antibody tests, so we have stopped recommending that.
