[Question #10741] AIDS/HIV risk

Hi, I was in my elevator in my building and I observed drops of blood on the floor as I was leaving the elevator. When I came out of the elevator, I saw some more blood on my floor. I’m concerned that that same person pushed the same button I did with a bloody hand or finger.  I used my knuckle to press the button and I had a small scrape on my knuckle. It is not bleeding or scabbed but still stung when I put rubbing alcohol on it. Am I at risk of HIV or AIDS from potentially touching a bloody elevator button with my scraped knuckle?

Welcome to our Forum.  thanks for your questions.

The events you describe were no risk events.  You do not know that the blood you saw was from a person with untreated HIV- statistically it is quite unlikely.  Even more importantly surface contact with infected blood is a no risk event.  The fact that you may have had a scape on your knuckle in no way changes this assessment.  There is no reason for concern.  In fact, there is no reason for testing.

Please don't worry.  EWH

Thank you, Dr. Hook. I’m confused because when I did a virtual visit, the doctor told me to go to the ER to get a tetanus shot and PEP. I thought breaks in the skin were a means of transmission and the blood was relatively fresh.

Dr. doctor you saw was being conservative.  HIV become non-infectious upon exposure to the atmosphere outside of the body.  There are no cases of HIV acquired through the sort of exposure you describe.  EWH---
