[Question #10769] Sexual encounter while on PrEP

Happy holidays, doctors.  I am a gay male and recently hooked up with another gay male.  I have been faithfully taking PrEP for several months, although there was a day about a week prior to this exposure where I didn't remember to take the pill until midnight (about 12 hours later than usual), but I did not skip a dose.

While I thought the hookup was going to be mutual masturbation, the gay ended up giving me oral sex.  While he did NOT penetrate my anus, his penis was in my crotch area and may have touched near the opening (although I was not anally penetrated).  The masturbation involved rubbing penis together.  I guess since his penis was near my opening and he ended up sucking me, I'm just feeling nervous about the encounter.  Recently I've started dating someone else, although we're not yet exclusive, and I'm wondering if I've done anything to put him at risk from this encounter if he and I hook up in the near future.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment. The effect of PrEP has been transformative, virtually eliminating the risk for HIV in persons who take the  medication regularly (that you were late one day does not change this).  There was no risk for HIV whatsoever from the activities you describe.  OTOH, there remains a small risk for other STIs, particularly gonorrhea from receipt of oral sex and while the risk is low, if you wish to be 100% confident there was no STI transmission, you may want to have a urine test for gonorrhea.

I hope this information is helpful.  Happy New Year.  EWH
