[Question #10844] Male on Male exposure risks

Hello Doctors,
Last night I decided to meet up with another male from online who is a local to my city. We proceeded in mutual handjobs, making out and he performed unprotected oral sex on me for a very small amount of time maybe 20-30 seconds because I stopped him. He claims he has had no other male sexual contact in many months and appeared to be of good hygiene

Of course after the event on my way home I noticed my throat had become sore and is now red and painful this morning.

What are my risks for any/all STDs including Mpox? If it helps I do live in Las Vegas

I appreciate your reply

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your confidence in our services.

You describe a very safe sexual exposure. Oral sex always is low risk for any and all STDs; not zero risk, but a lot lower chance of infection than vaginal or anal sex. As of your sore throat, no infection of any kind -- STD or others -- can start to cause symptoms in less than 24-36 hours. You also cannot have throat pain from any STD when your mouth and throat were not exposed, i.e. without performing oral sex on your partner. We're at the time of year of maximum frequency of colds and other standard sore throats; most likely you have a viral infection acquired at least 2-3 days before the sexual contact occurred.

These comments also include Mpox; no chance it's the cause of your sore throat, assuming no other sexual contact a few days earlier that you haven't mentioned. Although I have no knowledge of current Mpox frequency wherever you are, in the US in general we are in the expected mid-winter low. (Mpox so far has been highly seasonal, with much higher frequency in the summer and lows in winter.)

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you Doctor!

I read about current cases of Mpox in my city and it’s showing 1 case for January thus far and 2 in December
Thank you for explaining that it’s been known to decrease in the winter months.

This has been my only male to male contact in about 2 years so no other encounters of the sort.

Anything in particular that I should be on the look for? Or in this case should I just move on with the experience being very low risk?

Thank you again for your time!

It sounds like Mpox is quite rare in your city. Exactly right:  "just move on with the experience being very low risk".---

Doctor,

Unfortunately my anxiety won this morning and I made a visit to a local quick care where they conducted a urine test and throat swab.

They also gave me ceftriaxone IM injection, at 500mg then prescribed doxycycline 100mg 2x a day for 7 days

I understand the this was a very low risk encounter and more than likely none of this was needed! Having a past issue with anxiety lead me to the quick care.

My question is, with the above mentioned medication what is the likely hood IF I was infected with Syphilis, Gonorrhea or Chlamydia how effective would this treatment be in preventing/treating. Would further testing be necessary or would this treatment completely stop those infections?

I appreciate your time!

I would have judged your risk too low for the treatments you received, i.e. I would have advised waiting for the test results. However, those are the right treatments to treat or prevent gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. You do not need any further testing; all these now are impossible, assuming you take the doxycycline for a week as prescribed.---
