[Question #10885] I have a question about your answer to Question #8278

Hallo Dr.
I have. One question is it possible that a hiv infection remains undetected. Or how is your answer to be understood here.
That was the question:
- Can I relax and trust that my negative 4th generation tests from 2017-2020 prove that I did not acquire HIV of any type or strain during my earlier years of sexual activity?
This is your answer;
Question 1: Indeed you can rely 100% on your negative tests, for both HIV1 and 2. There are few known cases of the AgAb (4th generation) tests becoming negative, or remaining falsely negative, during the life of the infected person. (To my knowledge, none at all.)
Or am I thinking too much and misinterpreting her answer.
Thank you.

I cannot see your previous question. It occurred too long ago and your non-specific user name is useless in looking back
4th generation tests for HIV are 100% conclusive when performed any time more than 42-45 days following an exposure. If your test is negative, you do not have HIV-1 or HIV-1. EWH

I did find your earlier interaction with Dr. Handsfield 4 days ago and agree with all that he said.
You appear to be worrying needlessly. I also agree with Dr. Handfield that the internet is all too frequently misleading. I urge you to stay off of it and to ignore any statements you may have said there that suggest something other than what Dr. Handsfield and I have said. EWH

Hello Dr. Hook,
thank you for your reply, that was a question from another user and not from me that was asked on your platform. I just wanted to be on the safe side and ask them again.

Dear Dr. Hook,
You can consider our conversation closed. I recently got a negative result from a 4th generation test that was done a few days ago, so 4 months after the risk. This was my fourth test and I have a feeling that it might be too much. Although I accept the negative result. I was unsure about the statement in an old post by Dr. Handsfield that he here that were allegedly a few cases where the hiv virus was not detected and the test was false negative after years. But he also wrote that he didn't know of such a case himself.
I realize that I now have to work with the fear and not with the result.
result. One last question, are you sure that I can have sex with my partner again without a condom?
without a condom? My only concern all this time has been that I don't infect her with anything.
Thank you very much for your help.
Ciao

Thanks for sharing your result. You can be completely confident that you do not have HIV.
If your only concern is HIV, you can be entirely confident that you do not have HIV. There is no reason not to have unprotected sex with your regular partner. EWH

Hello Dr. Hook,
Thank you for your reply and your clear words. There is a lot of information out there that is confusing. Even the people who work in the labs at the front desk have no idea about their job. When I inquired about my test, the lady said I can get tested after a year.... doctor then also said that was wrong information from her. Sigh' I would like to clarify one last time. I have had a total of 4th generation in 4 months 1x HIV 1 PCR/RNA after 3 months. They were all negative. Surely there can't be such a thing as a hidden hiv 1-hiv2 infection that only comes out years later? This is my last
topic and will start looking ahead after 4 months. Rationally, it's really crazy that I'm asking here again. Thanks a lot and have a good time.

As you know, we provide up to three responses to each clients questions. This will be the final response.
Your results are absolutely conclusive and confirm each other. You have proven that you do not have HIV-1 with your 4th generation tests and your PCR and you have proven that you do not have HIV-2 with your 4th generation testing.
It is time to put any fears about HIV behind you and to move forward without concern. Take care. EWH
