Hi Dr I had a blood draw recently in a clinic: Music City prep clinic in Nashville USA. I know they use Labcorp as a company to perform the test. Mi test result for HIV was negative (rna hiv test) but later I was concern thinking what if they was some previous blood in the needle they use to take my blood or what if they put some blood there or something and I became really sorry. I have ocd regarding needle’s recently discovered. Dr what you do think about?

1- what is your opinion regarding this?
2- there is any possibility this happened in reality?
3- I know they use the vacunaitor systems so blood flow is always contrary to the vein. But let’s says was some blood previously on the needle what is my chance of get hiv? Percentage
4- I need to retest? I’m thinking do an rna hiv test but looking the needle this time. 10 days after is ok for the test? How accurate is at this point?

Thanks Dr

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions I'll be glad to comment.  Despite what your OCD may be telling you, as well as what you may or may not see on the internet, there is no realistic risk of acquiring HIV or any other blood borne infection from having your blood drawn in a professional setting.  There are simply no proven infections acquired in the way you suggest.  The phlebotomists working in professional settings such as Labcorp are highly trained and use non-reusable equipment for drawing blood.

This, in response to your specific questions:
1- what is your opinion regarding this?
See above, this was a no risk event

2- there is any possibility this happened in reality?
No, none

3- I know they use the vacunaitor systems so blood flow is always contrary to the vein. But let’s says was some blood previously on the needle what is my chance of get hiv? Percentage
0%

4- I need to retest? I’m thinking do an rna hiv test but looking the needle this time. 10 days after is ok for the test? How accurate is at this point? Retesting is a waste of time and resources. There is no need for testing.  When your result is available (I anticipate it will be negative) believe the result and move forward

Thanks for the clarification but this does not change my assessment.  The clinic you mentioned is a professional setting where phlebotomists are carefully trained.  There are no instances of HIV acquired in the manner you are concerned about.  Please don’t worry.  No change in my assessment.  EWH---

In practice if you use a contaminated needle to extract the blood with the vacunaitor to the tubes this would altered the rna hiv results? If there is positive blood in the needle this would result in positive result on the rna test?

Sigh.  This will be my final answer.  Vacutainers are routinely used to draw tests for RNA.  No change in my assessment.  I hope this final answer will allow you to move forward.  EWH---
