[Question #10995] Oral STI

Hi Doctors,
Approximately two weeks ago, I gave oral to a man for about a minute. No ejaculation. 6.5 days later I had a PCR test done on my throat (with a swab) for gonorrhe and chlamydia. Both were negative. Now, 15 days later, both my girlfriend and I have a sore throat. Mine usually is sore when I wake up but not much during the day. I did not have any sexual contact with my wife between giving oralt and the testing.
1. The doctor I went to said that the tests would be conclusive at 6.5 days since PCR. Do you agree and I should stop worrying about this?
2. Could I have passed this on through kissing or giving my girlfriend cunninglingess?
3. Assume I don't even need to worry about testing for HIV?
I am sure it is probably just a viral illness but the timing and symptoms are what is suspect.

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment. The encounter you describe was relatively low risk since most people do not have STIs and even when they do, most single exposures do not result in infection. This is particularly true in terms of oral infections. For reasons that are not entirely clear, oral infections are not acquired as readily as genital infections. In your case, your testing provides reliable proof that you were not infected. The results of your throat swab were taken at a time when results are reliable. It is far, far more likely that you and your wife have one of those periodic, community acquired, non-STI sore throats that most people get from time to time. In reply to your specific questions:
1. The doctor I went to said that the tests would be conclusive at 6.5 days since PCR. Do you agree and I should stop worrying about this?
Yes I do
2. Could I have passed this on through kissing or giving my girlfriend cunninglingess?
Kissing and cunnilingus are particularly inefficient for STI transmission. Even more importantly, you have shown you do not have a STI.
3. Assume I don't even need to worry about testing for HIV?
It is statistically unlikely your partner had untreated HIV. Even if he did, the estimated likelihood of infection is less than 1 infection per more than 10,000 exposures. This is just not something to worry about.
I hope this perspective is helpful. Please don't worry. I see no need for concern or for further STI testing related to the encounter you describe. EWH

Thanks Doctor. That is reassuring. The illness has progressed to congestion and dark green phlegm in the throat. I am assuming these are not symptoms of an STI and a garden variety cold? No fever.

Correct. These are symptoms of common, everyday respiratory tract infections and do not suggest HIV at all. Please don’t worry. EWH ---

Thank you Doctor and last question. I am just concerned as every morning I wake up with mucus in my throat and nose. I have to hack up all the mucus and blow my nose to clear it out. The mucus can be dark green, yellowish and sometimes clear. I have to consistently get rid of throat mucus during the day. My throat isn't sore as much as raw when I wake up. I am assuming from below that this is not a throat STD symptom and most likely end of cold or allergies. I guess I should count on the 6.5 day throat swab PCR test.

The green mucus from your nose and that you cough up suggests an upper respiratory tract infection and is in no way suggestive of any STI, including HIV. You may want your doctor to check it out.
Please don’t worry about HIV or other STIs.
This completes this thread. EWH
