Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services.

Nobody ever acquires genital HPV infection except by direct sexual contact -- that is vaginal, anal or (rarely) oral sex. The virus is never transmitted by exposure to the virus in the environment or by the kind of indirect exposure of the kind you describe. For example, people who live in the same homes as HPV infected persons never become infected through shared toilets, showers, towels, kitchens, and so on -- even after several years.

Assuming you are sexually active, almost certainly you have been exposed to HPV and could well be infected. But not because of the kinds of contact you describe here.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

HPV also is not transmitted by contaminated instruments used in medical care. And you can rely on your doctor's office not re-using any equipment between patients without sterilization or other standard methods to prevent such things.

Trust me on this:  when you eventually become sexually active, you will be at risk for HPV and can expect to be infected. Until then, there will be no risk at all -- don't worry about it. However, this is a great time to ask your doctor about HPV vaccination, which will be 100% effective in preventing infection with the nine HPV types that cause 90% of genital warts and cancers.

It's great to hear you're being immunized against HPV -- congratulations for a wise decision! You are now 100% protected against the 9 types covered by the vaccine. Protection is complete after two doses, but you should have the third dose as scheduled to assure lifelong protection.

Whatever website you found doesn't know what it is talking about. Even shared underwear without washing does not result in HPV transmission. Standard laundry kills HIV. You will be less likely to be misled if you limit online searching about HPV and other STIs to professional sites (like academic medicine, public health, etc) or to professionally moderated sites, like this one. You don't say your sex, but if female, you still need to follow standard Pap smear recommendations. Beyond that, you should have no concerns about HPV!

Each question includes two follow-up questions and replies, so that concludes this thread. I hope the discussion has been helpful. Best wishes, stay safe, and don't give HPV another thought!
