[Question #11137] Can I move on with my life and finally drop this fear

Hello,
My previous questions were Question #5440 and #8314 and #8861
With that information in mind. I finally made it past my crippling anxiety and tested with Quest Diagnostics and these are my results:
HSV1 IGG: 43.80
HSV2 IGG: 1.27
It took 8 years to gather the courage to test and I thought I would be negative given my exposure. I have a hard time with the idea of never having sex yet somehow might have herpes.
Also please dont judge for not testing right away. I was worried about receiving a positive or false positive considering my low risk exposure and at 26 I am much more able to handle the idea of being positive for herpes as a virgin than at 19.

First of all, I never judge!
Second, with an index value of 1.27, there is about a 90% chance that this is a false positive. As you may know, we are doing a study now comparing IgG results with western blot results to look at the chances of false positive IgG tests at various index values. I would very strongly advise you to get the western blot to confirm or deny this result. Did Quest also do an inhibition assay? Normally, with that index value, they would. If they did an you are negative on the IA, there is excellent agreement between people who get a negative on the IA test and subsequently get a negative on a western blot.

Thank you,
But I really dont have the funds to continue testing or the courage.
Why would my HSV1 be sooo high and my HSV2 be so low? If I did get hsv2 is would have been a years ago and both my encounters I saw their std results and never actually had sex with them. That would rule out the hsv2 not having enough time to create the antibodies correct?
with a 90 percent chance this is negative do I really have to continue testing. Im tired and scared. it was hard enough to push myself to get this test. I am mentally strained.

The most likely reason for whats going on is that there is some crossreactivity between your HSV 1 antibody and your HSV 2 antibody test. The test is picking up HSV 1 and saying it is HSV 2. The problems with false positives on the IgG are well known. So well known that the FDA in December sent a letter to all clinicians warning them of this problem.

If the only people with whom you had sex that you are concerned about tested negative for HSV 2 and you saw their results and now you have a low positive, this is enough, I believe, to reassure you that the IgG result is a false positive.
