[Question #11176] Syphilis chancre or something else

Hey, thanks for taking the time to look at my question
On January 12th I received unprotected oral from a Asian massage person. About 5 days later I developed a small hard red bump that was slightly painful at the base of my penis. It wasn't flat and it felt more like a small ball. I nervously squeezed and picked at this small bump until I got a small amount of pus to come out. I however kept picking at this until it became an open sore. The open sore sort of looked like an ulcer /chancre. Out of caution I took a rpr test at day 29 from my possible exposure on the 12th which came back as negative. Do you think this was a syphilis chancre or is it more likely that my excessive picking caused the ulcer like lesion? Would a rpr taken after 20 days since a chancre appeared show positive? And would you think the test would be accurate at that time if it was a chancre? Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment. I am confident that the lesion you describe was not a chancre and that you do not have syphilis.
Here are the reasons I say this with confidence:
1. Syphilis is uncommon in women (2/3 of syphilis occurs among men with other men as sex partners), even commercial sex workers.
2. It is unusual for syphilis to be transmitted by oral sex.
3. The location you describe is an unusual location for syphilis but a typical location for folliculitis (infection at the hair root
4. Syphilis chancres do not have pus associated with them but folliculitis lesions do
5. If the lesion was syphilis, your syphilis blood test would have been positive. Your test results show that the lesion you described was not syphilis
If the lesion is still present, the best thing you can do it NOT pick at it, to keep it clean and let it heal. I am confident that this is not syphilis.
I hope that this information is helpful. EWH

Thank you so much for your response. I seeked treatment as a precaution to this whole event and recieved 2 weeks if 100 mg doxycyline twice a day. Do you know if just receiving these messages without a positive result would end up In this health care provider reporting to the department of health or cdc? I used an online provider that can prescribed meds for various std they did not require a test

You did not need treatment.
There would not be reporting unless there was a positive test result.
You are worrying needlessly. EWH
