[Question #11239] HPV and pap smears

Hello I am a 60 yr old male married to my wife of 31 yrs.  I am hoping you can help me.  In my fifties I went through some difficult times, 8 years ago a frequented gentlemens clubs and on 2 occasions I received condom protected blow job and condom protected handjob.  Regrettably last year in July in a moment of moral weakness, I had another condom protected handjob performed on me.  No contact with any gential fluids with all encounters.  I my shame and guilt i did all the std testing, all are negative.  Now my wife has her pap.smear coming up in September and my fear and worry is that I have passed something onto her.  All her paps from the past have been negative.
I am in counselling for my fear, generalized anxiety and health anxiety. My therapist jokingly says I am being delusional but I cant help but feel that her pap if positive is my fault.

Couldn't please comment on my HPV risks from these encounters and my risk of me passing something to my wife and any ramifications for a positive pap

Thank you

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment.  Your risk for having acquired HPV is very low and your risk for having passed on an HPV infection acquired as a result of the activities you describe is lower still.  Let me explain why I say this:

1.  HPV is virtually never transmitted through receipt of masturbation, even when condoms are not used and you used condoms for the encounters you describe.
2.  Oral HIV is much less common than genital HPV and when it is present it is rarely transmitted through receipt of oral sex.  In your case, once again you used a condom making your risk of acquiring HPV in the unlikely situation that your partner had HPV again virtually zero.

You can be confident that you did not acquire HPV from the encounters you describe and therefore could not have transmitted infection to your wife.

I'm pleased for you that you are addressing your anxiety with professional help.  I agree with your therapists dismissal of your concerns.  Please don't worry.  EWH

Hello Dr.Hook
Thank you for your reassuring response.
Just a follow up, should she have a positive pap result in September, would that have any ramifications for mine or for that matter her fidelity?
Is it possible for manogomous couples to get such a positive pap result?  I understand that almost every one has HPV?
Finally can such a positive pap result show up after 30 yrs of marriage?  I have read that it is possible.  BTW we were both not virginal when we got married

Thank you

Regarding your follow up question, there is a little benefit to you asking these sorts of “what if” questions. If she should have a Pap smear showing HPV infection there would still be no way to tell where the infection came from or how long it had been there. HPV infections can resolve and then re-emerge years later.

Please do not go down that rabbit hole. EWH.

Hi Dr.Hook
As a follow up.  Should my wife's pap smear show suspicious cells, presumably because of HPV. That kind to result would also indicate that there would be no way of knowing where such a result came from?   Meaning that if she had a recurrence of HPV that caused suspicious cells then there would be no way of knowing where and when?   Just thinking that such a result on the pap would be my fault

Thank you

This is another "what if" question which serves little, if any purpose.  HPV infections acquired years before can sometimes reactivate.  If your wife were to have a positive PAP, there is no way to know when the infection was acquired.

This completes this thread.  There should be no need to return to the Forum.  I encourage you to continue to work with your therapist.  EWH
