[Question #11249] HPV transmission

Dear doctors,

After reading some papers online; I found that a surgeon performing laser ablation of GW developed papilomatosis and that HPV is found in the breath of lung cancer patients- therefore I assume can be passed through airdrops.
I would like to ask:
1) If I would have active oral HPV, is my baby at risk if I breath near his face or if I talk near or above his face?
2) would hpv in this case be transmitted by airdrops to him?
3) if not, why?
4) as a new mom, how should I behave- as not talking close to my baby would be impossible
5) if I talk above the pacifier and than give it to him- is this a risk to transmit the infection?
6) is saliva a route of transmision for hpv?
7) is the fact that I was vaccinated after the infection protective for transmission? Ab in the saliva?
Thank you!

I'm so sorry you remain so obsessed about all this.

Laser ablation generates far more intensive and potentially virus laden aerosols than can occur by speaking, breathing, etc. You cannot translate that report to any realistic risk to your baby, even if you have oral HPV -- which probably you do not. NO CHILD EVER GETS HPV IN THE HOME FROM PARENTS OR OTHER INFECTED PERSONS IN THE HOUSEHOLD.

1) Almost certainly you do not have oral HPV and if you do, your baby is not at risk.
2) No.
3) HPV is not transmitted by airborne contact.
4) You should not change any of your natural contacts with your baby.
5) No risk.
6) Saliva is believed to rarely if ever transmit HIV.
7) Vaccination further reduces any potential risk. I do not know whether HPV antibody is present in saliva but I don't think it matters.

You clearly are abnormally obsessed with this, to an extent that suggests a rather serious mental health problem. Please consider professional counseling; I suggest it from compassion, not criticism. In the meantime, I suggest you cease searching the web about HPV. The internet is not your friend. Like many anxious person, your compulsive searching is resulting in your finding information that inflames your fears and not seeing the reassuring information that also can be found.

The forum does not permit repeated questions on the same topic or exposure. This being your second it will have to be your last about your fears of oral HPV and your baby's health. Future questions on these topics will receive no reply and the posting fee will not be refunded. Like my advice about counseling, this policy is based on compassion, not criticism, and is intended to reduce temptations to keep paying for questions with obvious answers. In addition, experience shows that continued answers tend to prolong users' anxieties rather than reducing them. Finally, such questions have little educational value for other users, one of the forum's main purposes. Thanks for your understanding.

Best wishes to you.
