[Question #11264] Would Covid 19 vaccine impact a EIA Syphilis Test accuracy

Doctors I had a covid 19 vaccine approximately two weeks  before I took a syphilis EIA treponemal test - my syphilis test was negative - can I count on the accuracy of this test despite having a covid 19 vaccine two weeks before - I read the CDC said their could be some issues with RPR tests but they also mentioned Treponemal tests were not impacted.  I had a reverse algorithm T pallidum antibody  EIA test - I'm assuming this is a treponemal test is it?  If so then is my syphilis test accurate and not impacted by the Covid 19 vaccine I had two weeks before the syphilis test? Thanks for your time Doctors.

Welcome back to the Forum.  Thanks for your continuing confidence in our service.  I'll be glad to answer.  Let's start by addressing your question.  There are no data to suggest that recent vaccination for protection from COVID-19 impairs the reliability of tests for syphilis and particularly for EIA tests.

The more important question however is why did you test.  I realize that you have had concerns about your husband's risks for STIs and HIV years ago but I also understand from you that in recent years, you have been confident that you are mutually monogamous.  If that is the case, since you have tested extensively for STIs, including HIV in the past, there is no reason for repeat testing.. Based on your multiple prior questions, please consider why it is that you continue to worry about STIs, why you continue to test, and  the basis of your concerns.  I find myself wondering why you continue to worry about STIs, including HIV.

Please think about the latter part of my response.  Believe your syphilis tests but consider why is it that you continue to worry.  EWH

I don't know why I keep worrying - I will think about this and talk to my therapist about it.  I just had one other question is a T pallidum antibody  EIA test a treponemal test and those then as you said are not impacted by my vaccine last year.  I had the test last year when I had all my other tests and I just saw an article about RPR tests  and some false positives and it caused me to ask the question.  I appreciate you helping me and thank you

Yes, the EIA test is a treponemal test.

Please don't be misled by the internet.  The CDC tends to be overly conservative.  Be confident that you do not have syphilis.  EWH

okay thanks doc - my husbands past is the past and I know we have been in a monogamous relationship for years, I just was afraid to get tested for everything last year even though he had been tested many years before and was fine, then I started to doubt my tests - I don't know why.  I had been fine for a pretty long time, but when I saw the article about the RPR tests it just scared me and I just wanted some reassurance my tests are okay.  I have fear of stds have had them for years and working through this with my therapist - but I appreciate your concern and your reassurance, but I know I am in a great relationship with nothing to worry about - this is my own fear I have to work through because I know I am fine.  Thanks for everything doctor - you can conclude the thread now and thank you as always for your answers and your comfort.
