[Question #11312] Potential HSV exposure

Hi!
A couple of days ago I had protected sex with a guy. However he did use spit as lube and his nail was a bit long so ai remember it did hurt a bit in the beginning me when he touched me.

Anyways, the actual sex itself was protected and we did kiss.

In the morning it looked like he a tiny red sore/dot next to his lip, but it didn’t look like the typical cold sore.

He was still asleep so I messaged him today and asked if  he had a cold sore that day. He replied “uhm…I don’t think so”. Which to me sounded a bit weird, however maybe he thought I was weird asking that.

Anyways, I’m worried it may have been a cold sore. I know transmission through saliva like this is low, but of course anything is possible. I’m also aware of the fact that the IGG is about 70 % accurate for HSV1. I can also point I can never recall having a cold sore in my life and I’ve had an IGG done which was negative 2 years ago for both types. However I have had an ex boyfriend last year who was a sufferer from cold sore, but we never kissed during outbreaks.

From my encounter a couple of days ago, if I don’t get an outbreak, do you think testing in my case would be a unnesscary? Does it sounds nessecary in my case? I know there is no way to know if I contracted genitally or orally without any symptoms. But if I was in your clinic, would you think is really nessecarry?

Thank you!

You are correct that the IgG test for HSV 1 detects only 70% of HSV 1 infections, compared to the gold-standard western blot.
Given what you've said, his response to you, and the very low risk from saliva, I probably would NOT recommend an IgG test if you were my in-person patient, no.  But if you develop any symptoms either orally or genitally, you should have them checked out by a professional

Thank you for your response Terri. Last question.
However I did wake up today with a burning sensation in my vaginal area but it lasted only a minute or two. I feel fine now. Does it sound like it was probably something else?

However if I do develop any rash, have it checked out?

Yes, I think that was something else.  Herpes symptoms don't last a minute or two.
Yes, if you develop sores or a concerning rash, have a professional evaluate it for you.

Hi Terri,
I believe I have one more follow up question.

I developed a sore throat, sneezing, and runny nose starting 2 days ago. I had a mild fever during one night but it went away. Yesterday I looked into the mirror and could se some white spots in the back of my throat. Because all of my symptoms are combined with runny nose, sneezing and overall cold symptoms, would you believe this is caused by the cold virus itself and not herpes? I can mainly see the white spots near my tonsils and ovula. But most of them have started to fade away.

Thank you!

If you were the giver of unprotected oral sex to him, it is possible that you acquired HSV in your throat, that seems somewhat unlikely to me.  If the main concern here is the possible cold sore on his mouth, that is also a method of getting HSV in your throat, but again, it seems unlikely that you would acquire this only in your throat and not on your lip.  I doubt HSV here, but if you are quite concerned, you could go have a throat swab for HSV
