[Question #11316] STI Exposure?

First off, I want to thank your entire team for the invaluable service you are providing. Your expertise and time is greatly appreciated. My question: how likely is it to transmit/pick up an STI from handling/holding previously used sex toys (vibrator) and thong underwear of another person for 3-5 minutes? To clarify, the vibrator was not used by me in a sexual manner at all - or by the owner for at least 4 hours before my handling. I believe the thong was clean but I am not certain. Ultimately, I just want to confirm the possibility of STI transmission when handling items like this and how long an STI can be present on a sex toy and/or used underwear and create a risk? I realize you have answered similar questions before and this sounds silly. I am just having a lot of anxiety because I had sex with my partner a few hours after handling and want to be safe not just for myself, but for my family members (including young children).

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your confidence in our services.

If the vibrator had been in someone's vagina or rectum within a few minutes before it was inserted into your own body, there might be small risk. Once dry no such transmission is any risk at all. And certainly simply handling such a device -- even if immediately after use and dripping body fluids -- is no risk at all. STIs never are transmitted in families or by household contact. Please don't worry about any of these sorts of things.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you, Dr. Handsfield. Would your professional opinion about any risk change if under the same circumstances (vibrator not used for at least four hours but am not sure if the underwear was clean) either the vibrator or underwear was licked or inserted in my mouth. My anxiety is getting the best of me. Any elaboration on risk and whether I should get tested is really appreciated.

No, these details do not change my opinion or advice. And I cannot imagine that you would not know if you licked or put the vibrator or underwear in your mouth, but if you did it would not risk any STD. Of course you are free to seek STD testing if you like, but I wouldn't even be able to judge what to test you for.---
