[Question #11580] Oral Std questions

Hi doctors,
Thanks for providing this valuable service! On may 25th i (male) did unprotected oral sex on a female who worked at an asian massage parlor.  Approx 3 weeks later I developed a mild sore throat (some redness, no sores or patches).  I initially thought it was symptoms of Gerd/acid reflux (which I have barrett's esophagus) , but the started googling symptoms and became worried it could be an std.  About a week ago (4.5  weeks after exposure) I went to a lab for an oral std panel.  They used saliva which I was expecting a throat swab.  They sent it to a lab called Alimetrix, from the description of the test it was a pcr test. A week later all the following came back negative (Neisseria Gonorrhea
Chlamydia Trachomatis
Trichomonas Vaginalis
Mycoplasma Genitalium
Herpes Simplex Virus 1
Herpes Simplex Virus 2
Ureaplasma urealyticum
Treponema pallidum* (Syphilis) My question is, should I trust this test result or go get additional test? I still have the sore throat about 6 weeks later now.

Welcome to our Forum.  Thanks for your question.  As for so many of our clients, the internet has misled you.  Most oral STIs are asymptomatic.  Three weeks after an exposure is also quite a long time for symptoms related to your oral exposure to develop.

While a swab would have been preferable as a test, I would not worry that your symptoms are due to an STI and, were I you, probably would not bother additional testing although the decision to test is certainly a personal one.  If you do re-test, please have the samples be taken with a swab (the syphilis test, should be a blood test)   EWH

Thanks Dr hook.

From your reply, I understand that the saliva test I took is not as accurate as a swab.  I couldn't find any specific information on the accuracy of saliva tests on gonorrhea (I think this is my main risk factor from reading here).

On an unrelated note, I had some recent bloodwork done and my wbc was normal.  If I had a throat infection Std would this typically be elevated with sore throat symptoms?

The WBC is an unreliable indicator or the presence of absence of an STI.

As I said before, "were I you, probably would not bother additional testing although the decision to test is certainly a personal one".  EWH
