[Question #1162] protected oral

Hello,  I have a questions about stds from protected oral. With new info and studies on HPV, I am checking if your stance is still the same. I had protected oral sex with a prostitute and am worried about the area where the condom ends and the skin is exposed. What are the risks. I am a married man and my wife and I only have had sex with each other in our lifetime so my HPV exposure is low. Websites say the biggest risk is the STDS that require skin to skin contact . Basically I am asking what my concerns should be and worries about exposing my wife.

Welcome to our Forum.  I presume you man that you received condom protected sex from a commercial sex worker, rather than that you performed it on her.  Most STIs are not transmitted in a single exposure.  Condoms remain the most effective means of preventing STI acquisition if your partner happened to be effective and oral to penile transmission of STIs is a biologically inefficient process which occurs relatively infrequently.  The exposure you describe places you at no meaningful risk for traditional STIs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, etc.  As for HPV, your risk for this too is, in my estimation, very, very low although as you might imagine, there are no studies of transmission of HPV through oral sex.  Oral HPV infections are relatively uncommon and your condom use should protect you. While there is still much that we do not know about HPV acquisition, I would not be worried about the exposure you describe.  EWH

Any worries regarding my wife  and what is the incubation period for Hpv, I  honesty thought the risk was almost zero with a condom but there is a lot of info out there and it's driving me crazy .

As I said above, I would not be worried about my wife if I were you.

Typically warts develop 2-4 months after and exposure however, in your case, I DO believe your risk is close to zero.  Please try not to worry.  EWH

I read in another thread  involving a man in a similar situation as me that the odds of catching hsv1 is less the 1/100th of 1% . Are the odds similar with Hpv ? Thanks this is my last question

I am afraid that we have much better data on the likelihood of herpes transmission then for HPV.   Further, as mentioned above, this has not been studied, as it has been for herpes. That said, all things considered, I would still estimate your risk of getting HPV/ genital warts from receipt on condom protected oral sex as being less than 1%.  I would not worry.  EWH---
