[Question #11633] Hpv/Hpv warts risks

Hello Doctors, i am a 60 yr old male, married for 31 yrs.  My fifties were a difficult time, i frequented gentlemen's clubs.  On 3 separate occassions i had sex acts performed on me.  The first 2 were in my early 50s (51), condom protected oral sex performed me and the 2nd condom protected handjob performed me.  Condom was used in both occasions.  The last, much to my shame, occured last year in july, i had a condom protected handjob performed on me.  I have tested for all STIs and I am negative.  My concerns are for my wife.  Thus my risks of acquiring HPV from these events.  My have has an upcoming pap in sept, her previous ones have been negative for suspicous cells, not sure if she was tested for HPV.   What are my risks of acquiring HPV from these events and passing onto my wife?  Risks of wart formation and time frame for that?  What implications would a positive pap smear indicate? Would such a positive test indicate she got it from me from these events, we were both not virginal when we got married?  Finally any comments on dormancy of HPV i have read that it can be dormant potentially for a lifetime and then activate, is this true?  I look forward to hearing from you
Thank you Signed Very Scared and Unworthy

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment.  The bottom line is that all of the exposures you describe are VERY low risk for acquiring HPV.  HPV is not transmitted through hand to genital contact, even if the person's hands have genital secretions on them or have recently touched warts.  HPV is very, very rarely acquired from oral sex as well and for all the activities you describe, condom use reduces any risk for HPV even more.  I would be confident that your wife's forthcoming Gyn visit will not show suspicious cells and if she has been HPV negative in the past, will be again.

When person acquire genital warts, the warts typically appear within 3-6 month of an exposure.

Let's not go down the "what if"  regarding a PAP smear result which is unlikely to occur.

Concerns about Lifelong HPV infection and dormancy are overblown.

Please don't worry.  EWH

Thank you Dr.Hook,
As follow up
Let's not go down the "what if"  regarding a PAP smear result which is unlikely to occur.: I appreciate that but could a positive pap be a result of my activities?  I have read that pap results are not indicative of infidelity?  Would a positive pap have any implications for mine or hers fidelity?

Concerns about Lifelong HPV infection and dormancy are overblown.  What do you mean by overblown?  Again I have read about HPV showing up decades later even in monogamous couples.

Thank you for your help

No, as I thought I indicated that a positive PAP is most unlikely when I said "I would be confident that your wife's forthcoming Gyn visit will not show suspicious cells and if she has been HPV negative in the past, will be again.  Were it positive, nothing should be inferred about either person's possible infidelity's.

Detection of HPV following resolution of infection is accomplished using sophisticated research tests which are widely used.  The likelihood of HPV showing up after decades is very, very rare.

You'd going down the rabbit hole.  EWH

Thank you.  I guess I am trying to square a circle here as I find your comments confusing.  Sorry

Assuming the handjobs were no risk. Can't get it from that. That leaves the oral sex some 9 yrs ago.  Based on what you have said above and reading on this site , that positive paps not indicated infedility. How could your 2 comments jive.  Sorry.  If she would have a positive pap would the source not be the oral sex event or could she just have had before that event from earlier in our marriage.  Fyi she has had 2 negative paps since.  Her next test is in September, this will be the first one since she because menopausal

Thank you for your patience

Sigh-- I tried to provide answers to your various '"what if" questions.  Your risk for HPV is vanishingly low.  She's had 2 negative PAPs since your receipt of condom protected oral sex (virtually NO RISK).  There is no good reason to think that a test will now be positive.  Menopause will not change that

This thread is now complete.  EWH
