[Question #11648] Question regarding oral herpes

Hi again,

I purchased another question. I am still waiting for the HSV2 results and will update the results from him when he receives it.

However I have another question.

I remember that when I was around 12-13 years old I was sick and that I had a lesion in my oral area. However, I cant recall if this was outside or inside. I think it may have been on the outside and that I was sad that I thought I caught oral herpes and I could not kiss anyone. However, I asked my parents and they do not remember that I ever had a cold sore. Also if I had a lesion on or around my oral area, this was never swabbed or confirmed.

I have kissed a lot of people in my life, and many of them being HSV1 oral carriers. I have never developed any cold sore symptom later in life.

I did an IGG test 2 years ago and I was negative for HSV1 and HSV2. I know there is a risk that the IGG did not pick up HSV1 if I actually have it.

But because of this, I do not know if it is worth disclosing a diagnosis I am not even sure I actually have it. But because I know, if the lesion was never confirmed, then I guess it could have been something else.
And I know, if I did a WB, and I was actually positive, I still would not know if this was oral or genital.

In my situation, do you think any disclosure needs to be done? If the lesion was confirmed/swabbed, I would disclose. But I never was.

Thank you for your time!

I think if your HSV 1 and 2 are negative by the IgG, you do not need to disclose anything about what might have been an oral lesion years ago.  No.

Hi Terri,

He just got back his IGG test and he was positive for HSV1 and HSV2.

I will take an IGG test for HSV2 in 8 weeks, do  I need to retake at 12 weeks? Or should I feel ok at 8 weeks?

Also,
I had some red line between my buttocks and it was a bit sore, but this wasnt reallyy out of the ordinary. I can get some redness or tiny abrasions if I wear a thong and sweat. it was really humid these days. This lasted for about 2 days.
And 2 days later after that, I got a sore spot on my outer labia. But to my eye, the skin looked normal, but it could have been the slighest red. But that also disappeared after 2 days.

Overall, I feel pretty normal. Maybe a little bit under the weather today and a tiiiiny sore throat, but it has been really cold in some places due to the ACs constantly running overwhere. Also I described to you about contact on my buttocks before (I was really scared if he may have accidently touched his penis on my vulva without me noticing, but he told me he was sure there was no genital to genital contact, and also yes the mutual masturbation). Im a bit worried about the folliculitus scabs I had.

Also I want to add that the oral sex I gave him lasted very shortly, maybe 1-2 minutes and I think most of the sores was scabbed. The day after at the hospital, they were technically healed but there were all scabs.

If I test negative, can I leave this behind me? Would you still consider this a low exposure? Im so worried :(

I just wanted to add that I feel more under the weather now. I felt cold a couple of hours a go, I feel better now but it almost feels like Im catching a cold or something. However my throat feels pretty much normal now. No pain what so ever.

I would describe this as a medium - low exposure.  A negative IgG at 8 weeks is about as good as it gets.  Cold symptoms are not related to herpes.
Of course you are worried!  anyone would be, but with a very short episode of giving oral sex (HSV 2 doesn't like the mouth) and no symptoms yet for you, I think you are likely fine.

Hi Terri,
yes...I was really hoping his test to be negative but it came up positive as I feared.

And you were absolutely right about that I will feel probably a lot of things in my body. I think I may develop a fever now, I just feel a bit under the weather. Also I noticed a painful and red spot in my mouth, but the pain went away after maybe 1 hour.
Because I have OCD and pretty bad health anxiety regarding STI (especially herpes), I think this is my night mare.

As long as I dont develop the typical symptoms, like blisters or typical painful ulcers that looks like herpes, do you think I can just wait for the 8 weeks to pass? Otherwise, I feel like I will be in and out of the doctors office every second day. This is really affecting me mentally.

If I test negative at the 8 week mark, do you think I can leave this behind and not have to disclose anything to future partners?

Sorry but I just want to add, I took a flash light and looked in my mouth and I saw that a spot on my gum looks a bit red. It doesn’t really hurt but it stinged a bit when I ate fries.
However it doesn’t really heart, but it feels a tiny bit irritated.

I don’t know if I’m over worrying and should just wait for the 8 weeks to pass.

These worries are so normal, and would be true for anyone in your situation, but perhaps worse for you given your health anxiety around HSV.
One thing you could consider is getting some swabs to do at home if you develop concerning symptoms in your mouth.  You could ask your own provider about this or you can order them online at 24/7labkit - they are PCR swabs and you can gather them at home and return them either to the lab your provider uses or the 24/7 lab.  Sometimes people feel a bit better when they have swabs to use as it gives them some sense of control over concerning symptoms.
Was his test positive for HSV 1 or HSV 2 or both?

Hi Terri,

Thank you for your fast reply.

He was tested positive for HSV1 and HSV2. I took a look at the index value and the HSV1 was around 6 something and the HSV2 was around 50. So I am not worried this is false positive.

I live in South Korea and I think obtaining the those home swab kits will be very hard.

Do you think I need to worry about my spot in my mouth? Or would you expect more symptoms?
If I test negative at 8 weeks, do you think I can leave this behind me?

I want to try to ignore any possible symptom as long it’s not obvious, because I think I might be going crazy otherwise. I don’t know if this is a reasonable approach and just wait for the IGG.

Usually, the HSV 1 is the one with the high value, not the HSV 2 but they are both positive.
I wouldn't worry about the spot in your mouth if indeed you are truly negative for HSV 1 and 2 at this point - I would expect more dramatic symptoms.
If you are negative at 8 weeks, I think infection is highly unlikely
