[Question #11700] Truvada (Generic) as PEP
12 months ago

Good day. Unfortunately I’ve found it necessary to be back with a follow up question. I asked 5 days ago about my risk assessment and I’ve felt the need to ask again.
As indicated before, I was on daily Prep (Truvada Generic) for about 2 months. My exposure happened when I was already on Prep. After visiting my doctor, he said I could continue with my generic Truvada as PEP.
However, I have read elsewhere online and I see posts and articles saying Truvada alone as PEP is not adequate. I have been taking it again consistently after my exposure but, now I’m worried.
Will this be enough or I need to add another combination to the truvada? If so, would it not be late for that?

Welcome back to the Forum. I'll do my best to help. This is a matter of timing. It is my understanding that you were already taking generic Truvada as PrEP at the time of your exposure. The purpose of PrEP is to avoid the need to take PEP. It is easier to prevent infection following an exposure such as the one you described if you are already taking PrEP than to start taking preventative medication after an exposure. Your PrEP is highly effective and should protect you. There is no need for additional therapy. It is too late to add additional medication but, more importantly, it is not needed. I recommend that you just keep taking your PrEP. EWH---

Thank you Dr EWH. I’ll continue taking my PrEP and usual. Just to clarify, I need to take it for the 28 days as PEP or I can discontinue at least 2 days(doses) after exposure as I would with PrEP if I wanted to stop?

You are now 6 days since your exposure while taking PrEP so you could stop now although I’m not sure why you would. It sounded to me like you had decided to continue taking prep going forward. EWH.---

Thanks a lot. I had considered stopping so that I can get tested to confirm my status. This would make me continue my relations with peace of mind. That’s the only reason. Since I had planned taking it daily as I have been, I’m not sure if I can continue and get a reliable test result and also not risk my regular partner getting infected.
I had stopped all sexual contact at the moment. Would you advise continuing sexual relations with a regular partner while I continue with my PreP?

You do not need to stop PrEP to confirm that your PrEP has not failed. If you failed, routine follow-up tests would become positive.
I would be comfortable continuing regular, unprotected sexual contact with your regular partner.
This is my 3rd response. The thread will be closed shortly. Take care. EWH
