Hi Terri,
First, I want to thank you all for everything you have done for me during the last 8 months. It took me 15 negative igg HSV 2 tests over 38 weeks (8months) and two negative HSV 2 western blot tests (18 and 34 weeks) to finally get what you and Dr. Hansfield said about ignoring the positive 1.2 IGM and not having HSV 2. With time and all those negative tests, I am over that hurdle. My remaining concern is the pain/symptom I am still having. Which is penis irritation from touching fabrics/clothing. There is nothing there physically but when the head touches clothing I feel pain. I first went to the doctor after that low-risk exposure for pain after urination. That has finally subsided. All other STI tests have been negative except for HSV I/2 IGM and HSV 1 which was .60 and from that number it is believed to be old. I know you stated I couldn't get reinfected since I am already positive for HSV 1 but now this is where I am focused and concerned. What are the chances of reinfection? The problem is when i don't have answers for the remaining symptom I research and have seen cases where someone with the same symptom was due to HSV. I am working with a forth urologist who like you all believed the IGM was not a factor nor HSV 2 due to timing and treating me with alpha blockers which has helped with the pain after urination. Do you or Dr. Hansfield think I was reinfected with HSV 1 genitally? even with a high HSV 1 @ .60, I don't recall having cold sores. If not, what other STI would cause such symptoms for months? I have not had any other symptoms such as lesions, bumps, sores, itching, or rash.
Again, thank you for your continued patience.

I'm so sorry that after our last western blot together you can't seem to let this go. In 40 years of practice, I have seen one - count that, ONE - patient who reported having a cold sore in her teens and then had HSV 1 recovered from her genital area. It is that rare. And to be really honest, I'm not 100% positive about her history with cold sores. I had another patient who swore up and down she had cold sores as a child, and it turned out the diagnosis actually had been impetigo, per her medical records, not HSV. I think there are probably some people out there who report having had cold sores and then acquired HSV 1 genitally, but I'm simply not seeing them myself. I also think a lot of people acquire HSV 1 from kissing someone and genital HSV 1 from the same person giving them oral sex, but either the oral infection or the genital one doesn't show up right away but shows up later, so people think it is new. In addition if you did have HSV 1 genital infection, it would only be
active very infrequently not almost continually as is your experience.
And alpha blockers would not make a difference to HSV, not at all.
You and I have talked and talked about this and my opinion remains the same, as does Dr. Handsfield's opinion.
You've simply got to let this go. You have no lesions, never have, you have two negative western blots and 15 negative IgG tests. I think it's time to stop. Stop testing (I hear the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result"). Dr. HH and I cannot help you, we cannot think of any other solution for you and you need to start believing that something else is causing these symptoms, not HSV. It's time to accept the truth - you don't have HSV.
Sorry to be the bearer of tough love for you, but it is time
Terri
