[Question #11776] Oral Sex ~ STI or NGU?

Hello,

Last Tuesday (7/31), I had unprotected oral sex at a massage parlor. It was vigorous and occasionally painful. The next day, I experienced burning at the tip of my penis and urgency to urinate. The burning has improved but is intermittent, and I sometimes have a split urine stream. After ejaculation a day later, the fluid was clear, but it's normal now. I have no discharge or pain otherwise.

Questions:

  1. If this is NGU, UTI, or a prostate issue, should I see a doctor, or will it resolve on its own?
  2. When should I get STI tests?

Welcome to our forum. Thank you for your questions. I’ll be glad to comment. Let me start by saying that the symptoms of any STI would not typically begin within a day or even two of a recent sexual encounter. In addition, receipt of oral sex is relatively safe. The major STIs which do occur following her receipt of oral sex or either gonorrhea which, when present is obviously symptomatic in over 90% of persons and NGU, which is more subtle but takes even longer for symptoms to begin.  I suspect your symptoms are due to something other than an STI acquired through the encounter you describe above an answer to your specific questions:

1.  See my comments above. I suspect the symptoms will resolve on their own however, if they persist for more than two or three days, it might be advisable to be seen by a clinician.

2.  Testing is easy and widely available. The major test that you need is a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia (even though chlamydia is almost never acquired from receipt of oral sex- it’s a package deal).  In addition, a urinalysis showing increased numbers of white blood cells would be suggestive of NGU if the gonorrhea test is negative. Conversely, if the urinalysis does not show increase numbers of white blood cells that is strong evidence, that this is not an STI

I hope this perspective and information is helpful. EWH
