[Question #11779] It’s been years

Hello,
I was diagnosed with genital HSV-1 back in 2019. I didn’t even know I was having an outbreak. I thought it was just a bad yeast infection. I have not had any outbreaks since 2019. What is the probability of passing this along to anyone the longer I go without any kind of outbreak? I obviously tell all my sexual partners about my situation, But I’m wondering if I can be less concerned the longer I go without any kind of outbreak.

You can definitely be less concerned about the transmission of HSV 1 now than you were in 2019. Once you've had HSV 1 for two years, the research suggests that you might shed virus on about 4 days out of an entire year. And if you are having sex with someone who already has cold sores, the risk is just about zero that they would then contract HSV 1 genitally. I think you are in darn good shape at this point re: HSV 1.

Thank you. This is positive news. Knowing this, is it worth even telling people? what would you say is my ethical and moral responsibility to informing partners moving forward?

That is a very tough question. If somehow a partner did get infected, you would be legally responsible. If you had an opportunity to explain all of this and someone would really listen, then disclosing at this point in your infection might not be problematic. But the word "herpes" can be quite disturbing to some people. I don't have an ideal answer about this challenging question - no expert does. If you had a smart and attentive partner, I think disclosure would go well.
