[Question #11786] gonorrhea testing for hetero man

Two days ago, I kissed and received oral sex from a woman at a swinger’s party (my first and last this type of event).

My throat feels very sore today with no symptoms related to my penis. What are the odds I contracted an std and how early is it to get tested for gonorrhea/chlamydia given I may have symptoms?

Welcome to our Forum.  I'll be glad to comment.   Gonorrhea can be transmitted to the penis through receipt of oral sex and, very rarely, with kissing.  Transmission to the throat however is relatively uncommon and oral gonorrhea is most often asymptomatic.  Further, two days is rather quick for the onset of symptomatic gonorrhea but it is rather typical for the vial upper respiratory infections we call get from time to time.  I suspect that your symptoms are due to something other than gonorrhea but, if you had symptomatic oral gonorrhea a throat swab would be positive at this time.  Interestingly, for reasons that are not entirely understood, oral chlamydia (transmission or acquistion) is quite uncommon.

I hope that this information is helpful.  EWH

Thanks, that is helpful. I got a throat swab today after your comment. Hope it's negative!

Before the throat swab, in a bit of a panic, I had gotten a 400mg dose of cefixime and doxycycline through online pharmacy (saying I may have been exposed to gonorrhea). Was that a mistake? I had read that doxycycline was prophalactic but I am not sure if I should have waited for a positive test result to take cefixime.

If gonorrhea were present (very unlikely) there is a good chance that the cefixime and doxycycline you took would cure the infection.  As long as it was only a few hours before testing, your throat swab results should still be valid as the tests would detect gonorrhea bacteria even in the presence of recent antibiotics.  It would have been better and more accurate to wait for test results before taking antibiotics you did not need.  EWH---

Apologies to ask one final question here. How soon after finishing doxycycline (5 days) can I get a throat swab and the results be valid?

I finished antibiotics on Saturday morning and it is Sunday night. It seems I messed up getting antibiotics before the test.

Remember, you do not know that you got Gonorrhea.  If you did, there is about a 50% chance the doxycycline would cure it.  If you got Gonorrhea and the doxy did not cure it, a throat swab now would almost certainly be positive.  I anticipate that a swab will be negative.  When it is, I urge you to move forward without concern and without further testing.

Hope this helps.

Closing the thread now.  EWH
