Welcome back to the forum, several years after your previous question. Thank you for your continued confidence in our services.

Thanks as well for the succinct question. My reply is similar:  the answer is no. HIV is not sexually transmitted except by intercourse. Without your penis entering a partner's vagina or rectum, there is no risk -- regardless of how vigorous the "grinding". The virus cannot pass through clothing. Even oral sex or direct genital-genital contact (without penetration) does not transmit the virus. So no worries and no need for testing; and if you have a regular sex partner, you can continue your usual relationship without worry of transmitting HIV or any other STD.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you DR Handsfield. This makes sense.

Just curious, if someone wanted to be tested after an exposure, what would be the optimal length of time to wait for the test result to be considered conclusive?

The most commonly used HIV blood test is the one that detects both HIV antigen (part of the virus itself) and antibody (immune response to the virus) -- called AgAb, 4th generation, or "duo" tests. In newly infected people, they usually they are positive by 3 weeks after exposure, although it can take 4 weeks or, on rare occasions, 6 weeks. Therefore, negative results are 98% reliable at 4 weeks and 100% at 6 weeks. When the risk of HIV is high (unlike in your situation) or if there are symptoms that suggest infection has occurred, the HIV RNA/PCR test can be done, and always is positive by 11-12 days after exposure.---

Thank you for the information and guidance. I’ll leave this behind and move on with my life as you suggested.
